All of the travelers that want to stay longer than 3 months in the Schengen area, know (or should know) that they need a visa. Until the end of this year, the Schengenarea will be enlarged with 9 new countries soon.
The ten new memberstates that acceded to the European Union—and thus to the Schengen Agreement—on 1 May 2004, except for Cyprus, are set to implement the agreement on 21th of December 2007 (31th being the official date) for overland borders and seaports, and on 31th of March 2008 for airports.
The countries that will implement the agreement are: Czech Republic, Poland, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Slovakia, Slovenia, Hungary and Malta.
Switzerland is sheduled to follow in November 2008, the status of Liechtenstein, that has an open border with Switzerland is still unknown. Most likely Liechtenstein will have to implement the Schengen agreement on the same date as Switzerland, or Switzerland should have to close the border with Liechtenstein. (Switzerland already declared that they don’t want to do that).
