A flight would probably work better. Look at Bratislava as well as Vienna, and look at other northern Italian cities. Check www.whichbudget.com .

at www.bahn.de I found trains running between Vienna Weststation (Wien Westbahnhof) and Milano Centrale. These take about 11 hours, and go via Innsbruck. There also is a faster one, that's leaving early at 6.30 am, takes 9,5 hours, and goes via Venice. But like I already stated at you initerary inquirery, why Milan??

buck, as herrbert mentioned there are trains running from Vienna to Milan, however it's a bit of a long trip. You might find it easier to stop for a night or two in Munich, as it's a much easier journey from there (I did that trip not too long ago on the way to Lago di Como via Milan).
Just to clarify "next summer", are you travelling in summer 2008 or 2009?
Cheers!

Hi, Buck. if you can sleep on a train & have a railpass, you could catch EuroNight EN466 departing Vienna Westbahnhof at 21.25 (9.25pm) getting to Zürich's main station at 6.20 the next morning. Cisalpino CS151 departs Zürich at 7.09, getting to Milan at 10.47 later that morning. [btw, this would take just one day on a railpass. there's also another train that goes from Zürich to Milan without changes and takes about the same amount of time, but would take two pass days - or, you could pay cash for the 1st 90 min. or so of the trip.]
if you find out ahead of time - from the guy on the train who checks your pass/ticket - which tracks you arrive and depart from in Zürich, you'd prolly have enough time <45 min.> to grab a roll or something at a shop in the Zürich station to eat on the train to Milan. if you don't have the time, you can also buy something to eat on the train. <i've never done this, the food at train station shops looks more appetizing to me than the stuff they vend on trains. but, i've never tried the food at a "Bordrestaurant." the CS151 train from Zürich to Milan has a Bordrestaurant>
