It won't let me start a new thread in the on the road reports, so I'm putting this here!
I have been gone from Canada for just about 2 weeks now. Flew in to London for 4 days, then to Athens for 3.
London was great, although very expensive I had a great time! I recommend checking in to some of the free places to stay sites. I stayed with a girl there, who showed me around a bit, and gave me a free place to stay! A few tips: if flying in to Gatwick, Southern is cheaper than the Gatwick Express to get downtown (9 GBP as opposed to 13). Luggage can be stored at many of the major train stations, such as Victoria for 5.50 GBP a day, per piece. Not cheap, but convenient! Day pass for the metro/bus is 5.20. There is a 7 day pass for 25 GBP. Brick Lane in the east end is a wonderful place to wander!
Athens was how it is described most everywhere, truly 2 days is enough. And the sites are so crowded, even in September. Much cheaper than London though! From the airport, metro is 6 euros to downtown, bus is 2.90. They are both then valid for trains/buses for the next 24 hours. 24 hour pass is 3.00 euros. Bus is 0.40, metro is 0.70 one way. Acropolis and 6 other sites are 12 euros for a day pass. You can take the metro right out to the port at Piraeus. In Athens, they will not take credit cards for ferry bookings, so have cash, or pay at the port.
I took the overnight ferry from Piraeus to Santorini, 22.30 for one way, or 36.90 with a cabin and bed. Which I highly recommend, for 13 euros you get a good nights sleep and are fresh the next day. Lots of people spent their first day on the island sleeping!
Am staying at youth hostel Oia, 13 euros a night with breakfast. It's wonderful! Beautiful view from the patio upstairs, great location.
That's all for now, have to head off! Hope some of this is useful...
