Just back from Paris and a side-trip to Prague. I lived in Paris for about 6 months, and have made numerous trips there, but this was the first time that I was in Paris during the winter holidays.... the decorations are amazing. Galleries Lafayette, Printempts and Champs Elysees are all gorgeous! There is also the large ferris wheel at the top of Champs Elysees - I did not go on it, but am sure the view at night must be great. The Jewish area is also busy and decorated for Hanukkah. Spending the afternoon drinking yummy hot chocolate (the French know how to do hot chocolate!) in a cafe on a cold day, when it gets dark so early, is a nice way to pass a few hours.
My friend and I flew from Paris to Prague, where we spent a few days. It was our first time to Prague, and we loved it! As we were aproaching the hotel our taxi was stopped and searched by police. They looked in the trunk, under the hood, all around the car. So of course, as this does not normally happen in the U.S. I was a bit nervous! When the taxi driver got back in the car we were told that the American Embassy was there, so all cars are stopped and searched. Once we knew what was going on we relaxed and enjoyed the city! Both of us felt that Prague is a quiet city - Paris is so loud and busy, and Prague was a nice break. I'm not sure if it being winter has something to do with it, but it did seem a bit depressed there. We did the typical tourist stuff- walked along the Charles Bridge, saw the castle, visited the Jewish cemetary, drank great beer, ate the fried cheese. I loved the stalls selling mulled wine. I was amazed at how cheap Prague is - but anything is cheap after Paris!
I had a fabulous trip, and while Paris will always be my favorite city I can say that a few days in Prague was not enough, and I can't wait for another trip to spend more time exploring there!
