Hello All,
Just got back!
from...
Paris - 5 Days (Young and Happy Hostel)
Ghent - 2 Days (De Draecke Youth Hostel)
Berlin - 4 Days (Meininger City Hostel)
Gimmelwald - 2 Days (Mountain Hostel)
Cinque Terre - 3 Days (Mar-Mar)
Rome - 4 Days (1 Night Ivanhoe Hostel, 3 Nights Alessandro Downtown)
Siena - 1 Day
Florence - 4 Days (Youth Hostel Villa Camerata)
Bologna - 1 Day (Bed and Breakfast A Bologna)
Venice 2 Days - (Alla Casa Rosa - Treviso)
Can't say enough how incredible the experience is. All very smooth except a theft on the overnight train from Berlin -> Basel.
I would go on and on an on, but I think everyone knows what I'm talking about when I say "incredible."
I recommend all the hostels I stayed out, but specifically Young and Happy (in the heart of the Latin Quarter...near where Hemingway wrote!) and the Mountain Hostel. Meininger City Hostel is pretty far from central Berlin, and staying in Treviso was a huge bummer for Venice.
It's hard to pick favorites, but if it really comes down to it.
Highlights:
Paris
Venice
Cinque Terre
Siena
Disappointments (but not really disappointments):
Rome - The Vatican and Ancient City are the best sites in Europe. The churches and Villa Borghese were amazing as well, but as a city -- zero charm, dirty, smelly, no trees, no open green spaces.
Florence - The Arno is disgusting! Very expensive, and you have to pay for everything (9 Euro just to see Boboli Gardens? I know it comes with other admission but c'mon). We got kicked out of the Uffizi one night early, no warning. We didn't realize it was closing early that night and it would have been nice if they gave a verbal warning before they were going to close the doors and herd everyone out.
On the other hand...steak with blueberry sauce at Acqua al 2 on Via Vigna Vecchi....best steak of my life!!
I would love to answer more pointed questions about the trip. I don't know where to begin to brag about everything!
Thanks everyone for your help, especially Madam Trashheap, David, and Herrbert!
