So I've read that it's a good idea to buy detergent packets to wash small things in the sink, BUT does that really work when you are staying in a dorm with a shared bathroom? Or, is that suggestion just for people that have a bathroom in their private room and can hang their underwear and other stuff up with a fair bit of privacy?

You can just hang your clothes over your bed rail. Thats what we did, and no one ever stole our stuff. But whos to say that no one will steal your things. But If you do do that, wash it at night so you can hang your stuff on your bed while your in it and have it dry for the morning. Plus there are laundry mats in every city. And everyone washes thier clothes in the sink in shared washroom. It also inspries other travellers to do the same!

I have to say I didn't enjoy having to hang up my underwear for everyone to see, particularly when I was staying in a dorm where everyone else was male. But although I went to laundromats, some things like bras still need handwashing. It's no big deal.

I bought an elastic camping clotheline that will clip to just about anything. It was recommended to me that when staying in a dorm with bunkbeds that I should string that around the posts. It would dry my clothes and provide some privacy

We hung our clothes on a line and had no problems. It is a pain washing your clothes if there is only one sink, but it can be done. I got the feeling no one wanted to steal my clothes!! : )
