Valery Giscard d'Estaing, a former french president, in a proto-constitution for European Union, has suggested a new name for EU: United States of Europe What's up with that? That name is pretty much already taken. Like, by a little country sandwiched between Canada and Mexico? I'd always thought that the French *didn't* like America! Why would they want to steal our name? It seems another name would be so much better. What's wrong with the one they have: European Union? How about Union of European States? Does anyone else find this a little odd? - d

I find it odd considering the fact that they aren't states of europe... they're countries. United Countries of Europe sounds good eh. yeah right. I don't see anything wrong with European Union. What would be the logic in switching the name anyway? To waste some money?

Who can ever understand the French! ;D But you are so right Patrick......it's 'countries' of Europe not 'states'....... I'd say he has more than enough difficulties going right now to keep him occupied with things more pressing than this! ging who wonders......are we going to join the Eurotrip pubbers in political scraps?

was this thread a boo-boo, Ginger? sorry.
i've not spent much time on Eurotrip. is this stuff a problem there?
regardless, i'll shut up now on this subject. i just thought the idea of changing eu's name would be of interest here.
that france thing was intended as tounge in cheek.

It's not a problem when done in fun-no one has a problem with that.
It's just over at Eurotrip they get into these horrible battles about things-name calling etc. It gets terribly ugly! I think Ging and I both have scars to prove it!
I'm sure no one here is capable of being like that though-but if it happened, Ginger has the power to delete it-don't you worry about her! ;D ;D One swift press of the delete key and away it would go!
Getting back to the subject, yeah-that's a bizarre choice alrighty.

No I surely didn't mind the post at all. In fact, I rather enjoy a good discussion and hearing everyone's point of view. We're all different here, different ages and from different places. That's what makes for a good exchange of ideas and it can be interesting and fun.
I apologize for my remark......Kim obviously knew exactly what I meant and that it was tongue in cheek......but you among others maybe did not. Sorry.
Post away on anything that tickles your fancy! ;D

With regard to this subject: I don't know how many people say they've been in Holland, but, if you want to be correct, it's called the Netherlands! (Most (if not all) people on this board are quite correct, actually ;D) Don't know why this is description is an acceped english translation, even the Dutch translation isn't plural, but we do use a word much more similar to the words 'the Netherlands'. I think it's all about the fact that the word Holland descibes an acient country in the year 1700 or so, with half of Belgium attached to it. And we don't want that, do we!

Cat, Duly noted and I will take care to be correct! ;D And seeing as how very much I loved the Netherlands and how little I did Belgium then I surely don't want to get that confused at all. Where've you been? Good to see your post this evening. ging
