I have a 5 hour layover at Gatewick on a Saturday. I know it's probably not enough time to go to London. How far is Brighton? Do i have enough time to make a trip there?

No way. Gatwick to Brighton is a good 45min train ride (so 1hr 30 in total), leaving you about 1hr in Brighton once you've left enough time to check in again etc.

There's a regular bus service to Horley, a medium-sized town 2 miles away. It's nothing special, but you can wander round there for an hour or two which is a good deal better than wandering round an airport. You can even walk there.
