Just checking the boards and putting my feet up.... In the south of the Netherlands it's the fest of 'carnaval' right now. I think you can compare it a bit to the beerfest in Munich, it's a lot of people dressing up, dancing and simply enjoying themselves (yes, and drinking beer!). This lasts a total of five days and includes parades with lots of music and beautiful things to see. I went out yesterday and the day before, and will be going tomorrow. I dressed up like a lady from a harem Today, I'm just relaxing and gathering strength for tomorrow... When I listen closely, I can hear the music playing down the street. In the past, it was a feast to prepare for the fasting in the 40 days before easter. This means you are not allowed to eat candy and drink alcohol, so in these five days people 'saved up' for the days to come. Nowadays, it's just about having fun. It's hard to explain Carnaval, it's something you must experience. People in the north of the Netherlands think we've all gone mad Cat

Cat, How well I remember Fasching in Bavaria! Pretty much the same thing as your Carnival if I am not mistaken. The place for that sort of thing in the US is New Orleans for Mardis Gras,,,,,,,have fun and be safe! Good to hear from you. ;D

Sounds like a great time! I love things like that, especially when you get to dress up. Over here, Halloween is one of my favorite holidays! Kim

sorry not to have seen this thread before: the most fun i had on a single day in europe was Fastnacht, "fat Tuesday," in the Swiss town of Basel. Much more fun than Munich's "auf den Wiesen!" (aka Oktoberfest)
We still observe Lent in the Church, but it's not a time to be deprived of fun, etc. its a time to reflect on the most important day of the Christian calendar: Easter.
Actually, on 25, 26 & 27 April, some of my on-line friends are gathering for the weekend. We take part in a discussion list for a band we all enjoy. the band, Brave Combo <www.Brave.Com/bo>, has several north Texas shows that weekend. in the past people have come for this weekend from all over: California, New York, North Carolina, Wisconsin, Massachusetts, even Ontario & British Columbia!
