I just finished handing in my final exam in this class I've been taking. I went up to speak to the Prof. and this lady who is a student and about 65 years old was talking to the Prof. I waited my turn.....she said she just wanted to thank her because she thought the course had been great. Then the Prof. asked her what she would be doing next year and the lady started crying!! Then she said I'm graduating.........at which point the Prof. congratulated her and hugged her. Then she started crying. Which made me want to start crying. That's such a cool thing -- to be 65 years old and to finally be getting a degree. I'm sure when that lady was young not many females went to University. What an achievement! Anywayz, that was my warm and fuzzy for the day. I just felt like sharing with someone.

That is a really nice story. My mother used to type papers back in the 1980s for a woman in her 60s who was in law school. It's never too late to make your dreams and goals happen.

Wow, that is really nice. Can you imagine the feeling of accomplishment she must have? Holy crow!
It is never too late, is it. I want to work for Lonely Planet but they aren't hiring new writers/editors but maybe one day!
I was disappointed when they contacted me but then I got to thinking, hey-who's to say I can't write my own damn guidebook if I wanted to!

Kim,
With all your resources on the site, polls, opinions from the message board and photos, heck you should write your own guidebook. You've got an arsenal of information here already.

I happen to agree with Patrick! I say go for it..............you have the beginnings of an online guidebook in this site. Using your site as a resource base I'm sure you could totally be able to put a guide book together. Maybe you could start your own company focusing on travel stuff............. What do you do for a living anywayz? I happen to think you'd be fantastic for LP. When did you hear from them?

Heard from them a couple days ago-they said they use the same writers so there isn't much opportunity with them, which kind of sucks!
I work for the Fed. Gov't here in Victoria. It's fine-but not my dream!
The only thing I can't come up with is an original angle. As in, what would be different about my guidebook that people couldn't get in LP or Let's Go..

I see where you are going. I guess your angle would have to depend on what you enjoy. Like food or maybe the museum thing. LP seems to be good for giving you background but LG seems better on directions and stuff. I really feel that a really good overall guide doesn't exist. Maybe you could create one..............maybe city guides instead of country guides.........

I know, we liked Let's Go for certain things and LP for certain things but neither was perfect.
Also, they both don't update really well. You would think that they would check each thing for each book, but you see the same errors get printed time after time in different editions. It's something I'm working on in my head-hopefully one day it will be a reality!

Kim,
Your angle could be a "live" guidebook that people could use like any other book, but that they can always refer to the site for additional information, such as the message boards and online hostel reservation. The book can refer to resources on the site.
If Rick Steves can put out a guidebook, you most certainly can! ;D

hi! I know this is an old subject, but I can't help thinking this is a great idea. I really think, and I know I'm not the only one, that you have the talent needed to create a guidebook. Ok...creating it is easy, publishing is an other story, but I'm sure just by selling it on this site, you'd get more and more info and sales as you go and in a few years you'll be in well known travel book shops. I can't help but suggest a real "budget" guidebook. I know "On a shoestring" and others are pretty good, but I still think there are not as "budgety" as they could get! I am sure many of us would be willing to hunt for your info during our normal vacations. As for me, I'll be happy to spend time tracking down the best "budget" info or any other topic you'd adopt on my future trip, and I am willing to report my info or the info you'd ask me freely, must I say...for the well being of the oh so budget traveller!!! ;D anyways.. just my opinion xoox Jen
