I read a study that said the average personal space that an American feels to be "right" and the average personal space a European feels to be "right" are indeed different. In fact, Americans have a greater need for personal space than any other culture, at least as determined by that study. I'm sorry I don't have more information. However, if you encroach on a European's personal space, he or she will feel uncomfortable, even if the threshold is different than for an American.

About Jamaica: we found Montego Bay to be very different from the southern areas of that country. It was much mellower in Negril and thereabouts.
