Hey Patrick, I was reading your answers and I was wondering why you didn't like Montreal. Most people who visit me love it and I was wondering what made you didn't like it! Don't worry about your answer even if I'm from here, won't take it personal! Also, what about Montego bay, it would be the first place I'd visit if I were to go down there, I guess I'll reconsider my plans! xoxo Jen

Not to answer for Patrick, but I was in Montego Bay for spring break in college. I thought it would be fantastic. But we got robbed each of the first four days we were there. I won't go into details, but they scams went from creative to downright brutal. I've since tried to erase that trip from my memory. Had I thought about it, I would have answered Montego Bay as well!
That said, I have known quite a few people who have been there and loved it. Just can't say the same for me, I was scared to leave the hotel by the end of that trip!

Montreal wasn't terrible or anything, but the people weren't too friendly at all (at least the ones I ran into). I also went into quite a few stores and would ask a question in english and just actually get stared at and the clerk would walk away!? I couldn't believe it. It has been awhile and I usually hear good things about Montreal, so maybe I'll have to go back and give it a second shot.
Montego Bay... see Ray's comments. I've never seen so many windows with bars on them. They may as well just make the storefronts out of cement. I never got robbed, but it's not the place to stroll around. If I was vacationing there for any extended period of time (which I wouldn't) I would stay at the resort.

Despite being an anglophone, I had a good time in Montreal (but I was there on a business trip and so didn't get a chance to go out much) and did not suffer from snotty clerks. So I'd recommend visiting it again and see if it's better the next time.
One place I didn't enjoy visiting was Mississauga, ON. Mostly because I got little chance to leave the hotel when I attended a conference there and there was nothing at all in the immediate vicinity. The city looks like a plantation of head office buildings.
Big Ray, I'm curious why you didn't enjoy Brindisi, Italy and Tangier, Morocco.

Actually Mississauga is a really nice city. Were you staying in a hotel near the airport? Because the area around the airport isn't that great and looks pretty bad I think compared to the rest of the city.

when i was there, about two years ago, i had a fun time in the city by Mount Royal! My 1st hostel wasn't as nice (unbeknownst to me, the Gran Prix was going on when i got there & the good hostels were all full!) but, the locals were always nice to me, despite my total lack of French language ability. (German was the foreign language i took in high school.) In the stores, everyone i dealt with replied in English. a few people who were riding the trains didn't, but it was rare. [now, the intercity trains in the rest of Quebec were a different story!] i look forward to my next trip to Montreal! - d Montreal wasn't terrible or anything, but the people weren't too friendly at all (at least the ones I ran into).
