Nobody alive and kickin' today?
I'm struggling being back at work after the long weekend here (BC Day) - it was tough getting up today! I had the Friday off too.. 4 days!

I'm still alive.... but its sooo hot! There is a heatwave in Europe and even in the Netherlands, temperatures hit over 30 degrees (Celcius, that is). I'm not used to those temperatures and all my collegues are on vacation, so I'm not quite happy having to work these weeks. But: two more days to go before my Barcelona trip (long week-end, leaving this Friday). I guess it will be even hotter over there....... Cat (on a hot tin roof !?)

I'm here. It's my daughter's turn for our next big trip. She wants to go to Japan, or her second choice is Ireland/Scotland. So we are busy contemplating the relevant advantages and disadvantages of each option

Her money will go alot further in Ireland/Scotland. Japan is insanely expensive. When we were going to Asia, it was one of the place we considered for a stopover but went with Bangkok, after alot of research regarding the costs.

She's only 12, so it will be mostly my money Her brother was really good about budgeting on our recent trip, but she's not as natural a miser and enjoys shopping. So the idea of going to Japan with her does scare me in respect to the cost I have posted on Asian travel forums about how to keep the costs down, but one taxi ride in Tokyo and the budget goes out the window . Ireland/Scotland seems like it would be a much more relaxing trip, which is important as I have to fit such a trip in during my vacation time.

Well, your money will go alot further then..haha! ;D
I think it's great that you are introducing your kids to travel - my mom did the same thing and I really think it help us become well rounded.
One memorable trip was driving down to Mexico then touring through Mexico camping on the beaches in our trailer for a month. I think we were about 10 and 12 then.

That sounds like a really neat Mexican trip. From what I've read, though, going to Mexico by car can be scary. Did you have any bad experiences that made you feel at risk at all? It would certainly be an inexpensive way to see the country.

Nope, none at all.
I did a similar trip about 5 years ago as well.. drove from Vancouver and did the Baja, Mexico with 2 friends (granted they were male) in a VW van.
That trip, they had just appointed a new politician whos platform was a crackdown on drugs. We got pulled over on average about 3 times a day by the federales. They looked scary with their machine guns etc. but it was never a problem. That said, I don't know if I would have been comfortable with that if it were only girls.
They were fine.. would look through our stuff and never find anything, obviously, so we would just get sent on our way. I think it was our BC plates that made us a target though!

On the Japan thing......... my sister lived there for a year when she was 15. And it was also on the parental units expense account. The thing with Japan is that travel within the country is horribly expensive!!! Even the Japanese themselves don't travel and see their own country. AND that's why you see them everywhere else. It's SO much cheaper for them to go to Hawaii than to stay near home and travel! Yup, so besides the fact that the country is just generally expensive don't forget to take transportation costs into consideration. Cheers!

I've been to Japan 2ce (visiting relatives) and yes, it is expensive but i had the BEST time there! If you can afford it, I definitely suggest going. It's so different from anywhere I'd been and the food... oh the food!! my 2 cents, Kate
