by Marlena De Blasi
from the back cover:
He saw her across the Piazza San Marco and fell in love from afar. When he sees her again in a Venice cafe a year later, he knows it is fate. He knows little English; and she, a divorced American chef, speaks only food-based Italian. Marlena thinks she is incapable of intimacy, that her heart has lost it's capacity for romantic love. But within months of their first meeting, she has packed up her house in St. Louis to marry Fernando-'the stranger,' as she calls him-and live in that achingly lovely city in which they met. .......
First off....this is a true story. Secondly.....it is most aptly I suppose a 'chic' book. Thirdly.....I devoured and totally adored this little book.
Venice....the sights, the aromas, the tastes waft up off of every single page. You are there, in the markets, the bridges, the wine cafes, at home on the Lido.....her writing is amazing. I can't think of any other 'travel' book that has so completely captured the essence of a city, flung me straight back there and set my travel related fingers skipping over the keyboard looking for a good flight.
If there is any small place in your heart that sometimes dreams of Venice......you'll never go wrong with this.

I loved this little book! Read it straight through, then immediately started it again. So descriptive, full of memories, it's an amazing read. It's a chic book in that it is a 'romance' of sorts....but it is more a love story to Venice, and therin is it's charm. Let me know what you think. ;D
p.s. also includes several wonderful recipes at the back...some I will be anxious to try myself in the coming days.
Ah....Venice!

As a "guy" the book probably doesn't appeal to me in the same way, but I can certainly understand the enjoyment it holds for others. However, I've been "sitting on the fence" on whether I should add Venice to my Itinerary. If the atmosphere there affects people that profoundly, I will definetely put Venice on the list! BTW, I think the movie version of "Under the Tuscan Sun" is going to be released in the next week or so. It did look interesting. Also, "Mambo Italiano" apparently did well in the Toronto Film Festival. Cheers!!!
