First time this has ever happened to me. Luckily, nothing was stolen. It's strange because I had my digital camera in my room! Not to mention other equipment, such as my scanner and printer. Items which could have easily been carried out of the house with little or no effort. Indeed I should consider myself quite lucky. But on the other hand, I feel a major sense of intrusion. The thought that... someone entered my personal space, my HOUSE and went through my belongings is unsettling and eerie. Only the front door was damaged. Still, it costs a little over $200 to repair. Have you ever been robbed?

Once we heard some men right outside talking about 3 or 4 AM in the morning. Then our dog started barking. They started swearing and one said something like, "There's a dog here." And they left. If he hadn't already done so from just being himself, our dog earned our loyalty that night.
What you describe feeling sounds very normal. Sorry this happened to you.
One tip I try to remember, although not relevant to your situation: keep your keys separate from your purse/wallet. If a thief should happen to get your purse, he will also get your ID with your address, etc. If he has your keys also, then he can get in pretty easily.

Good idea. I usually do that. Keys in left pocket. Wallet in right pocket. Your advice was probably directed to the girls though...

I guess, for girls it's harder, you normally keep everything in your purse!
sad about your intrusion numbers...!
we had our place broken into 4 years ago, our country place but it was like a house. It wasn't so bad for the stuff, the insurance paid it all back, but they stole my clothes and underwear, I felt eerie for months after that!

I've never had my house broken into, but I've had my car broken into twice. The first time, my car was at the bodyshop getting fixed, and the guy there left it outside in the lot overnight (BIG no no because my car is lowered with chrome rims, so it just screams "break into me")) and someone cut the chainlink fence to get into the lot, smashed the driverside window and popped the trunk. They stole my subs... My insurance company covered that....
Then another time, I was at Boston Pizza (a pizza place) and it was only about 4:30pm, still light outside, and some guy broke the window (meanwhile the alarm was shrieking for everyone to hear, except me in the restaurant of course!) and stole my CD's and my CD player which I loved! Two people actually witnessed it and came inside the restaurant to tell the manager. Long story short, the manager knew it was my car, told me what happened and I phoned the police... There was nothing they could do though, the licence plate of the truck the guy was driving came up in their system saying that the truck was stolen too!! Just my luck... So the insurance company paid for that one too...
I know what you mean Numbers, you feel so invaded, knowing some stranger was in your personal space poking around. Glad to hear nothing was taken from you though! $200 for the door is a small price to pay...

Sorry this happened, Numbers. I know that invaded feeling,I have dealt with house break-ins. Since we got our dogs, we have not been broken into, but we've certainly had kids or whoever messing with our cars. ::sigh::

It was a long time ago, we had broken into out house 3 times in less than a month. The first time someone broke into my father's van parked at the far end of our long driveway, then a week or so later, someone broke into the basement which had an independent entry and stole my Dad's tool boxes. We changed the lock in the door, A week and half later they broke into the basment again and stole more tools and yard stuff. Both times, they were never smart enough to turn the second set of lights on, because in neither ocassion the saw my drum-set (almost brand new and worth about 1500) which was at the far end of the basement. Needless to say, after the third break in, we moved to another neighboorhood.
I have had my car broken into twice while in NYC, and brutally vandalized once at a rock festival and I have been mugged in New Orleans. Oh, I know ALL about that irky feeling about having my personal space viloated.
