So I thought I would share my good news since I'm WAY beyond excited!!! I'M GOING TO LAW SCHOOL!!!!!!!!! ;D Yup, come September I'll be a first year law student at the University of Victoria. This is nothing short of a miracle. I can't wait - I've never been further West (in Canada) than Ontario. WAHOO!!!

Karen this is TERRIFIC news indeed!!! I know well how much you were hoping for this and huge congrats to you for making it happen. I fear I must confess my Canadian geography is far from up to snuff....so tell me, will this put you any where near to Kim?

I love it here - you are going to adore the climate and the city!
I get to go to Toronto for the first time in Oct. actually - my best friend is being relocated with work next month. She is coming back in August to be in my wedding then I'm going out in Oct.
If you need any help with anything to do with Victoria, I can get whatever you need!

CURIOUS TORONTO,
CONGRATULATIONS!!!
From some of your previous Posts, I had somehow assumed you would be attending University in Montreal or Toronto. I think you'll like both U-Vic and the Victoria area.
Although I live in the Okanagan, WELCOME to the West Coast! I hope you have a wonderful time here, and good luck with your studies. (BTW, I've never been east of Alberta, so I look forward to seeing Toronto some day -- after Europe of course).
Cheers, KEN

I just wanted to thank everyone for their warm wishes! I have to say I never dreamed I would be a West-coast girl - go figure! I must say though that I'm totally looking forward to living in Victoria. Wahoo! Still excited!! ;D And yeah I'll admit that originally my first choice was McGill 'cause of the dual legal system and language thing. I really thought it would be the best place for French-speaking, francophile little me. Oh well - I'm MORE than happy with how things have worked out. And Kim, thank you SO much for your offer of help! This is just fresh so I haven't gotten down to thinking about many of the practicalities yet. I have to say my biggest worry is housing - I think I'll have no choice but to fly out there during the summer, at least once. Later on I'll ask you about the good areas and stuff when it finally gets down to picking. Yaaaay! Hee, hee . . .

You're starting law at UVic in September too!?!? Kim, I'm heading out in a little while to look for an apartment. Do you have any hints/suggestions on places to avoid or neighbourhoods I should try to get a place in. I hear Gordon Head is nice and right near the University. I don't drive so I'd prefer walking distance to class. Thanks in advance! ;)

Gordon Head is very nice and near UVic. Another bonus is that there is tons of basement suites in that area for rent as well, due to where it is in location to the University.
It's best to have something lined up before the beginning of August though as that's when all the students come back into town. Also, try and phone way ahead to get your cable/internet appt. as the cable guy that hooked up our cable last year told me last year after all the students came back that there was a 2 month waiting period for cable/internet hookup!
My other suggestion is find out where the bus route is in relation to places. If you want, I can fax you the for rent classifieds before you come out so you can phone them. Places go pretty fast but new ones are always cropping up.

Just wanted to update . . . I got back from Victoria last night and it is indeed a beautiful place. I was particularly thrilled by the mountains (love them) and the bunnies all over campus. ;D I saw a lot of apartments and suites. Some were yuck and others were good. Overall though I was somewhat surprised at the prices of a lot of them. Anywayz, I found a place. It's gorgeous - to be honest as a student I have absolutely NO business living in a place like this. For those who know Victoria I'll be living right at the bottom of Foul Bay Road in a very large and nice one bedroom suite. Best part is I have a deck and a ridiculous view of the ocean (it really is at the bottom - right were the 3 bus stops are) and the mountains. Yaaaayyy!!!

Sweet! That's a great area, a bunch of my friends live over there. Really central to everything and great for you for the buses going to UVic.
Isn't Victoria weird for places? The grossest place can be super expensive but a nice place can be cheaper. It's all a matter of just looking through them all!
We plan on getting a house with a suite in that area in about a year, maybe if you ever want to move we could rent it to you!
