A friend and me are planning on backpacking for 3 weeks.Does anyone have info on leaving bags during the day? Are there public lockers in the major cites or in train stations. maybe places at hostels to store your belongings? I concerned about carrying everything with me all day.

Some places have luggage storage at the train stations. But availability is sometimes unpredictable. Many hostels have lockers, but not all, but bring your own combination lock. Some hostels will have a more or less secure room for you to store your stuff, but others don't. You have to read up on the hostels you are staying at to know what their arrangements are (or give them a call).

I just started checking out different hostels- the double rooms look great - I didnt envision us in a room by ourselves- that would be perfect, although my friend does snore.- is it generally safe to leave all your stuff behind in your own room? anybody had problems?

Don't leave anything valuable, like cameras, passports, money, credit cards, etc. in your room. It's rare for someone to get their dirty clothes stolen. You do have a bit more security with a double room as opposed to a dorm, but don't rely on that.
Where are you going?

I don't know if that's possible! Start planning how you will get from place to place. Then you'll see you don't have time.

Um, that is 6 countries in 3 weeks, from furthest west to darn near furthest east and the southern 'tip' to well up north. Do take a good look at an atlas and then at a few train scheudules. Hopefully you'll realize that it doesn't matter much about a double room or where to store your bags. That isn't going to be a problem as you are looking at about 75% of your time on a train anyway. ;D

after terror attacks, lockers in train stations have gone away in much of Southern Europe. on last year's trip, i'd planned day stops in several Italian towns: Pisa, Orvietto, etc. there were no lockers for my stuff, which made such stops hard to impossible.

true, but there are flights, too. after going by train in Spain & Portugal, LizzLadd could fly from, say Barcelona, to Florence, Venice, Rome, Naples or others. - d

well we havent decided much of anything- the city of amsterdam for obvious reasons- just wanted to check out the scene there.. major cities i guess like lisbon-madrid-paris and rome but know im thinking of checking out a couple of cites per country - trying to cut down on travel time and see more of a few countries- we'll see- its very up in the air- do you have any suggestions?

Surely looking at a map should be the very first thing you do, especially if you're not too sure about distances within Europe?
Personally, you need more research. Barcelona is a far more attractive proposition than Madrid and there are other similar cases in other countries. Neverless, for 3 weeks Amsterdam, Lisbon, Madrid, Paris and Rome is next to impossible unless you were to concentrate on budget airlines.
