So our good friends are getting married and they live in London (well, in Purley). They have requested donations to charity for gifts but we also wanted to do something special for them as well. They came all the way out here in August for our wedding but we can't make it to theirs as they are having it in Botswana, where her relatives are.
I was thinking we could give them a gift certificate to somewhere they could have a weekend getaway at - a hotel somewhere that isn't in London so it was a bit of a break but not too far as they would only be able to go for a weekend.
Any suggestions of where and what hotel? She likes the ocean if that's any help.

Somewhere like Bournemouth if it has to be in the UK. Hilton do deals like that, although they are fairly expensive (£190 per room per night for the Hilton Bournemouth). Personally I'd even consider finding them something in Paris or somewhere else- maybe on the coast of Normandy or something? It's an easy weekend from London and is a bit different.

That's a great idea. I think we will just give them a gift certificate to a hotel for a set amount then they could decide how long they would stay. Probably would be easier.
I'll look into both your suggestions.

Are you looking for a hotel, hostel, cozy B&B? Does it have to be by the ocean? A 'romantic/stay in bed weekend getaway or a fun filled party time?

Not a hostel but a B&B or a hotel... It doesn't have to be by the ocean, that was just one thing I thought of. I'd just like to give them something so they would go and have a romantic time.
Their "honeymoon" in Botswana consists on going on safari/camping with about half their relatives!!

I wonder if some place like Oxford, Cambridge, or Canterbury would be nice for a getaway weekend. Or maybe Bath? I think there are some hotels in Bath that are "resort-oriented" and have spas, maybe just the thing for a nice relaxing weekend.

I'd avoid Canterbury- it's too close to London and there isn't much there. The same is true to some extent for Oxford and Cambridge, other than the Unis there isn't much to do.
Bath on the other hand- that's a pretty nice place, just about the right distance from London. Also there's more to do there, with the Roman Baths and stuff. Only problem is that it's inland.

Exactly why I adked about the ocean....Bath immediately came to my mind as well. There are some really good B&B's there and a few quite la-ti-hotels as well. This is the one I stayed at: www.elginvilla.co.uk/ and I loved it! The owners treated me like family the moment I entered and the breakfasts are to write home about! But....Bath is full of B&B's and I'm sure if this is not what you are looking for just a bit of searching will find something!

I'm not sure if you have made a decision on where you want them to stay, But if you want them to stay somewhere nice, romantic, and by the water why not Scotland or Ireland just take the ferry across to Ireland there are some great Castles they can stay in for the weekend that arent too dear. Let me know if you want me to help. you can email me at mindandspirit2003@yahoo.com

Bringing this topic up to one of my teachers here (who seems to have a crapload of money for a teacher), she suggested this place: www.aboutscotland.com/glebe/house.htmlShe says she and her hubby stayed there and it was absolutely gorgeous. Looking around that site, there are lots of places that look gorgeous! Doug
