Where are the best places to safely store backpacks. I hate the idea of having to lugg the thing around everywhere I go, like babysitting a 50lb paraplegic. The only place I've heard of is train stations, but I've gotten dubious reports from those. Are there any other good places, free or cheap to store them? Are hostel rooms generally safe from thieves? Thanks for any information.

I've been in hostels where packs have been stolen, but generally it's a rare event. Then again, you shouldn't really have anything worth stealing (other than clothes) in your pack.
In terms of security, some hostels have lockers (remember to bring a small/medium size padlock, say 20mm across or so, for them) whilst others don't. Generally your pack should be ok in your hostel room though.
Stations are ok places to store your pack when waiting for trains, day trips etc. They're normally pretty secure (extremely secure in the UK and most places in W Europe, with airline style searches), but range from cheap in Eastern Europe to exorbitant in Western Europe.
