The thought of anyone "controlling" the Internet is a bit scary. I read both articles and hopefully none of this rubbish comes to pass! I can see where this would be terribly popular with repressive regimes. The Chinese are already exerting a lot of censorship and control over their Internet users, a practise which requires tens of thousands of beauracrats!
The U.S. and several other countries are aleady reportedly monitoring E-mails and other communications via the "Echelon" system. I don't think further monitoring is necessary (whatever happened to the concept of "freedom" and "free speech"?). On a related topic, apparently the Italians and others in Europe now require keyloggers and other software to be installed on computers in Net Cafes, and users also have to provide their Passports or other I.D. in order to use these computers.
The U.N. is in a bit of a mess right now, and seriously needs to put it's own house in order before it even thinks about taking something else on. If this nonsense takes hold, I won't be taking a sledge to my Computer, but the Ethernet plug will be "pulled" in a big hurry!
Cheers!!!

the danger seems to have passed. fortunately, America is still keeping the keys to the online kingdom that it built.
Oh, Ken, my understanding is that the email monitoring is done by computer, looking for key words related to terrorist plots. it's a law enforcement/national security thing.
