thanks David! Did not realize Basel was close by! I'll go check that out. Most budget flights I have found are either for Paris or what seems to be 'southern' France.

hmmm.....all I can find on the date I need--18 Nov----is 39.99 GBP + tax. That's a bit steep. the earlier flight, 07.20, is UK£23.99 - but the day before has that flight at UK£18.99. are your travel date/time inflexible? [making a 07.20 flight would require an early rise] edit: even UK£40 + £5 tax + train from Mulhouse is probably less than train + ferry + train to Strasbourg; no? just a suggestion.

Maybe this site could help? www.skyscanner.net/map/Baden-Baden also looks to be right on the French border and in the approximate location desired. Maybe Lyon?

Thanks guys! Nothing will be cheaper than the train...3 month rail pass. But....still need to get to the Continent and not particularly picky about where I alight. Have hotel pre-paid in London, arrive 15th, depart 18th....and no, I wasn't paying attention to that being a Friday when I did it or would have just stayed another day or two in London. Flights are always more expensive on Friday's! I just need a cheap way to get over there from London....no matter how or where to. Found a couple of ferries using WT's link for 25 euros...that's cheap enough...but still have to get from Kensington to the dock so add that to total price. I am booked in Paris from 22-28 Dec...and from 15-18 Nov in London...other than that I am wide open to wherever. Just assumed northeast/west France would be logical...have not explored that area overly much, and would make it easy to get to Paris for Xmas. But, with rail pass, really no where is more than a days train journey away...so open to all suggestions. ging .....and sorry Jen....I seem to have hijacked your thread! ammended to say nothing cheaper than the train....ONCE I get out of UK! I do know that chunnel is not covered!

Just checked chunnel.....at 1341 on the 18th a second class with rail pass from London to Lille is $60......that's not bad and about the same as ferry prices I am finding. Flights might well be less initially, but cost getting to airports and back will bring it close to that number I think. Hmmm.....may just go with this. What do you think?

The $60 is not bad at all.
If you do want to go for a cheap flight and don't care too much about where, I randomly selected London Stansted to Tours on Ryanair for Nov. 18, and got a 10:15 AM flight for 1 cent plus tax (so works out to about 18 pounds total with the credit card fee and all).

What little I know about Tours is that this is where students go to learn to speak French with the "right" accent. It's in the Loire Valley which has lots of interesting chateaux. And it's not that far from Paris.

spent 4 days in Tours! Great town! Would have no problem returning. It is 'south' of Paris and I was thinking to satay north and east of there....but quick enough to move on from there. What airline was this on? RyanAir?

Yes, that's Ryanair.

just took a peek at bahn.de which shows all train connections between Tours & Strasbourg going through Paris.
seems a little ironic, as you didn't want to fly to Paris in the first place.

well, going to be in Paris over Xmas....thought was to spend the 3 weeks or so prior wandering another bit of the country...or even BeNeLux if that worked better. Just trying to avoid backtracking if I can help it.
