well yes... teachers require a university education. and while i can't speak for the US, in quebec, you can be a nurse with only college but you get paid a lot less than if you get a nursing degree in uni.

Mom got a bad cold & couldn't come to see Dad for over a month. she was well enough to come back for the last 2 weeks before Dad passed. as i was the only family member without other obligations, i spent 16 hours a day at hospital with him. <i'd spent 8 - 10 hours before Mom got sick> so, i got to know a litttle about the nurses. [our thought was that if we showed interest and monitored what all happened to him, he'd get better care]

with only college but you get paid a lot less than if you get a nursing degree in uni. Jules, am i to understand that a university degree is thought to be higher than a college degree in Canada? in USA, many colleges have higher ratings than most universities! actually, here the term university refers to a collection of colleges for different disciplines. among those with knowledge of academic process, small, exclusive schools are often more prized.

well, generally yes. generally speaking colleges issue diplomas universities issue degrees. what i am most familiar with is the quebec system: high school here is until grade 11. then (if you are planning on university) you do a two year pre-uni program at college (called CEGEP = College d'education general et professionel). if you're planing on science or engineering, you do science if it social science you're planning on, you do a diploma in social sciences... etc. then you go to university where you do a 3 year program (some engineering degrees are 4). CEGEP ends up being the equivalent of the US last year of highschool + freshman year. however, if you are not planning on uni, CEGEPs have a host of professional programs such as nursing, dental hygenist, airplane mechanics, theatre, police technology (before you go to the academy), early childhood education... etc... there are tons of prof programs that is just a sampling. obviously doing one of these doesn't stop you from going to uni but these programs are all 3 years long and you end up with a diploma not a bachelors degree. they're also designed to give you a marketable skill whereas the 2 year program ends up giving you the pre-reqs for uni (like freshman physics, math, biology, chem - in my case as i was in science).
jules
oh yeah and i should mention, CEGEP is VERY cheap... it costs about 150$ per semester.

oh yeah and i should mention, CEGEP is VERY cheap... it costs about 150$ per semester. wow! that is cheap. my alma mater, Austin College - accredited to award Bachelor of Arts (BA) and Master of Arts in Teaching (MAT) degrees, tuition costs about US$20,000 per year. and, for a liberal arts college of its reputation, is considered cheap.

Ah Jules, aren't we lucky! Cegep is cheap here, I mean, 100 + books, is not much! And to us, University is expensive and it's about a thousand per semester plus books, so it's not that bad compared to you

we are indeed lucky, jen! and my last two years of uni i hardly had any books! when you get that specific in science, there aren't usually many text books that are usefull for a class... we usually had course packs and papers to read.

books, fees, room & board, add at least US$5,000 to that US$20,000 each year. [AC is a residential campus, underclassmen are required to live on campus]
edit: upper level classes are heavy on primary sources, textbooks are of limited use. they still had lots of them, and cost a lot, of course!
