By the way Jules, Université de Montréal is privately run, compared to UQAM that is government run!

not in the sense that it receives MAJOR gov't subsidies - that's how you pay only 2000$ a year.

there are lots of colleges & universities in USA that are publicly funded. but, they tend to be on the big side, many thousands of students. University of Texas at Austin, www.utexas.edu/ has nearly 50,000 students! unless you're in very high level, specialized classes, you're nothing more than a number to the professors. what i liked about AC, the professors - all of whom had PhD's - knew the students by name. it was a very supportive environment, mostly. unfortunately, in my case, there were powers in the administration who didn't know me. so, going back to finish after my injury was a pain. [much of that pain was of my own doing] - d

mcgill is huge, too: 30,000. but whether or not you're a number depends on your department... biology i was a number, geography you knew your profs. its probably similar in a lot of places...

my alma mater had less than 1200 undergrad students plus a handful of grad students. each classification/class-rank had fewer than 400 students. [each starts with no more than 400, and some would inevitably drop out. *very* few transferred in] no way to be anonymous! - d
