this reminds me: my sister's ex, who studied psychology, had a t-shirt that said "Don't bother me, I can't cope!" i guess we get the snow and you get the hurricanes and tornados... disadvantages to living everywhere. but tornados are *very* rare! <only once in my life did one pass over a house where i was - i was 12 or 13> you must deal with those snowstorm every winter. [the only hurricanes we get in Dallas are those funny daiquiri type drinks!] - d

I noticed on the evening news that Ontario, Quebec and the eastern parts of the U.S. are getting "hammered" by a fierce blizzard. Some of the scenes were reminiscent of the Quebec ice storms that occurred a few years ago (power outages, etc.). Hope it doesn't last too long, but at least you'll have a "white Christmas".
It's certainly puzzling why the eastern part of the continent seems to get ALL the inclement weather, especially this year?
Cheers!!!

It's certainly puzzling why the eastern part of the continent seems to get ALL the inclement weather, especially this year? the Atlantic has always produced more storms than the Pacific. at least that's my recollection. - d

David,
that certainly seems to be the case! However, don't the hurricanes (ie. Katrina) originate in the Caribbean? I'm not sure where the latest storm affecting Ontario & Quebec is originating? Perhaps the Hudsons Bay area?
I'm thankful that I live in the west. Although we have a small amount of snow on the ground, most of it is up on the ski hills where it belongs!!! We just hosted the World Cup FIS Cross Country events here last weekend, and although I wasn't here at the time (in Vancouver for the weekend), I gather all the "world class" athletes were quite impressed with the snow conditions.
Hopefully the storm in the east will pass by quickly, as I know how miserable it can be during conditions like that.

Ok, not meaning to be competitive, but those pictures look like a normal day! Have you seen Montreal lately? Let me know if you want to see the picture of my car with snow over the roof I'll send it by email! I mean seriously, this has been the worst snow day ever! I wake up to have 35 cm of snow, my car BURIED by the plow that passed, having to move it before the snow gets hard. So, late for work, and ended up being MAJOR LATE! I shovelled, took me about 2 hours until i even got close of getting it out and then, bam, the plow passes and undoes ALL my work! I was mad! My mom and I start shoveling again, bam! 1h30 later, the plow passes and undoes ALL our work! By this point, I'm suicidal and it's 12 o'clock (very late for work!). I went to get my uncle who is janitor, asked him for the building snowblower. IT DOES NOT WORK, he says! I said, make it work or I die So my dad and him worked on that for a while and got it working, but no more gas! So I had to walk in hiphigh snow to get gas out of a little tank. Came back, got the snowblower going, and 1h of snowblowing later, my car was out! No, it's not over guys! Whilst getting it out, the snow had packed up underneath it, so it broke my hoses leading to my radiator and my antifreeze had a tabletop party on the snow beneeth! YEAH! So I finally put the GOD!/!("/&(*DA!/()*)!"(/*!()"ED thing in the garage (which I'm not supposed too cause I don't pay for it!) and left for work at 2! How nice! So basically, 35 cm of snow fallen in 6 hours is quite nuts. I hadn't seen that, or at least wasn't old enough to have consequences with it. Ah guys, sorry about the rambling, but my body hurts from the shovelling xoxox

technically David, hurricanes originate off the coast of Africa. It's just normally once in the Carribean that they gain their strength. But they don't begin there.
Jen, that sounds like how it used to be in Indiana, plows and all! How well I remember how tired and sore you would be after a shoveling session....that stuff is heavy!
Sadly, no snow for me, the promised accumulation never appeared. Hopefully today!

admittedly the photos don't quite capture the snow enough! however that wasn't at the height of it... but then it got dark. there was a city bus stuck for hours outside my apartment. i laughed.
thankfully i have no car, i live smack downtown so i walk everywhere. Jen - sounds horrible!!
i seem to remember that storms emminating from the pacific are worst in El Nino years and that they tend to hit the coast of South America more so than North America. but my memory from the first year of my undergrad is hazy...
