technically David, hurricanes originate off the coast of Africa. It's just normally once in the Carribean that they gain their strength. But they don't begin there. isn't it off the West coast of Africa, the Atlantic side? ;D and the Caribbean sea is part of the Atlantic ocean, i think. [more pettiness from david ] but, actually i was somewhat mistaken. with El Niño/La Niña, Pacific areas also get their share of weather. maybe not as violent, but they get earthquakes and tsunami which more than makes up for it. - d

well...to continue the pettiness my dear David.... ....yes, the west coast of Africa is indeed the Atlantic, but while I may be wrong, the Carribean is the Carribean, not the Atlantic. Thus my point, they start in the Atlantic, not the Carribean. Need to go Google this to be certain......whatever did we do in the 'olden' days before Google? Massive bursts of snow squalls today, but only for 5-10 minutes and then suddenly blue skies, then snow again. Maybe an inch or two, but nothing like I was hoping for. Bitterly cold and windy though!

the Carribean is the Carribean, not the Atlantic. Thus my point, they start in the Atlantic, not the Carribean. my recollection is that the Gulf of Mexico counts as Atlantic. so, it seemed logical that the Caribbean also would count as Atlantic. Need to go Google this to be certain......whatever did we do in the 'olden' days before Google? following your lead, i did just that. Google pointed me to CIA World Fact Book. in the "Atlantic Ocean" listing, it sez "Area: total: 76.762 million sq km note: includes Baltic Sea, Black Sea, Caribbean Sea, Davis Strait, Denmark Strait, part of the Drake Passage, Gulf of Mexico, Labrador Sea, Mediterranean Sea, North Sea, Norwegian Sea, almost all of the Scotia Sea, and other tributary water bodies" it caught me a little by surprise that Black Sea counts as part of the Atlantic. <i guess it's logical, over there by Ukraine, Turkey and all> also, that there's now a new ocean - Southern Ocean, as of Spring, 2000! who knew? oh, before Google we used books: encyclopedias, dictionaries, atlases - or we remained ignorant. Edit: but, my reference books all predate 2000. i'd never heard of Southern Ocean!- d P.S. i wasn't sure how Caribbean got in this, so i looked back. Eagle had asked something about it.

for some reason I can´t get logged in...... Anyway, I will of course bow to the knowledge of the CIA and stand corrected. Keeping quite warm, thanks for the ´worry´. My heavyweight silk long johns can not be out ´colded´! They are the best thing ever, are so thin and weigh nothing but much warmer than anything else!

Sure you have Jules...you likely just call it something else. It´s a brief, but very intense spurt of near whiteout snow. Like a heavy downpour in a thunderstorm, lasting a few minutes, only snow. And some yesterday were very intense, like I couldn´t barely see the other side of the street for a bit.
Maybe David will google it for you and give you a more scientific explanation! BWAHAHAHA
(I just love razzing him!}

a spurt of intense snow in a snow storm yes.... but not with the blue skies you described above.
glad to hear your keeping warm and having fun!
