I am going to Europe in May for 6 weeks and I am wondering if 3000 is enough. We (my boyfriend and I) are planning on starting out in Ireland and than travel to Spain Italy, Switzerland,Germany,Amsterdam, and Londan and leave out of Ireland again. We buying the 2 month rail pass to do this. Do you think 3000 is enough to get us by? Staying in Hostels the whole time? Should we join the YHA? Is it worth it?
Any suggestions/comments would be appreciated!

$3000 American dollars? Are your railpass and airfare in addition to that? Is that per person.
Even if the $3000 USD per person is separate from transport, it will be hard to manage on that for two months. It works out to about 40 Euros per day, which is very difficult in the expensive places you are want to visit.

US$71.50/day, for two people. in Ireland, Spain, Italy, Switzerland, Germany, Netherlands and UK.
even if transport is covered, let me put it this way: were you expecting to eat? in many places, that isn't gonna cover lodgings!

To answer your original question, yes.
As the others have said, this budget is pretty much inadequate. Your best bet is to either cut down the length of your trip, or to find more money pretty quickly. Ireland, Switzerland and the UK are all incredibly expensive, whilst none of your other countries can be described as being cheap.

General rule of thumb hereabouts is 75-100 USD per day....your 3000 is well below that. As Muvver said....are you planning to eat? On the most bare bones, sleeping in the park/airport and eating not more than once per day your budget is too lean by half.
Sorry...I do know that is a bummer to hear, but hey, better now than stranded, broke, somewhere in Europe.

Well, i did it, but it is because I had people to stay with along the way, if not, I couldn't have made it. I think you should make a general itinerary and plan your costs very well with the places you want to go, make sure you add in every penny, and then you should get a general idea of what it will cost you.
You may be disappointed, but it's better now than overseas I guess...
Sorry for the bummer

that US$75 - US$100 that Ginger mentions [CN$87-CN$116] is per person, by the way. two can often travel for less than twice what a single traveler needs, but not so much with hostels. <hostels are priced per bed, not per room. but, two hostel beds still cost less than a hotel room most of the time.>

Stacie, to add to what the others have posted, I doubt that $3000.00 is going to cover your proposed trip. However, it would be a great help if we had a bit more information about you, and about the places you want to visit. You're not registered on the Board, so don't have a profile which makes it difficult for us to know which currency you're dealing with?
Perhaps you could re-post your note in the "Pre Travel Planning" section, with a list of the cities you want to visit. This would help those on the Board in providing more informed answers to your questions.
A few other comments -- regarding the Rail Pass, you might be able to get by with a less expensive pass than the two month version. Once you've figured out your destinations and the order of cities, it will be easier to figure this out. Using point-to-point tickets for shorter routes might be a less expensive option. Also, you'll need a different Rail Pass in England (if you were planning on using rail there?).
With regard to the YHA Membership, there might be some minor price breaks with a membership. From what I recall, YHA members also get preferential treatment with reservations (ie: if there's only one space left, this will be allocated to the member over the non-member). The cost is minimal, so a membership might be a good idea?
Some additional info. that would be helpful -- where are you flying from, why not use "open jaw" flights so you don't have to return to Ireland and does the $3000 include rail pass?
I hope this is some help to get you started in your planning. Good luck!!!
