Does anyone have tips on exercising and keeping healthy whilst travelling through Europe? At the moment I go the gym about 6 days a week and want to keep up my fitness for the four months that i'm away..... Is it safe to go running alone? Is it worth taking swimming gear (i.e. goggles etc) to do laps? What are the chances of stumbling across reasonably priced gyms? OR...... am I completely misguided in thinking that I may be able to maintain my fitness while i'm away?? Thanks, Kimberley.

Kimberley, I don't have any information on "reasonably priced gyms", as I've never looked? However, depending on your touring style, I suspect you will get lots of excercise simply by walking around. While it's not the same as the more strenuous aerobic exercises, this should keep you in shape anyway. I used a Pedometer on my last trip, and found that it's not difficult to walk 5-10 miles a day while on holiday.
When I'm travelling, I tend to suspend my usual exercise routine. I'd much rather experience the sights of Europe out in the streets rather than inside a gym or swimming pool. You'll have to decide which approach works best for you.
Happy travels!!!

Gyms are fairly expensive, from what I've seen, as are swimming pools. I think it's safe to go running alone, so long as you choose a park or path frequented by lots of other people. Where are you going? That might help with pinpointing fitness facilities.

Thanks for the replies..... We're actually starting off in the US & Canada for about a month....hawaii, LA - San Fran, Toronto and New York..... We'll be in Europe for about 3 months. We haven't planned this part of the trip so much but we're starting in Paris and then plan on going to spain, germany, czech republic, croatia, turkey, greek islands... I had a bit of a "practice pack" the other day and have realised that carrying around that backpack is going to be a workout in itself!! But i've also decided to get a strength training program written up by a trainer from the gym which i'll be able to do away from the gym and then i'll use running and walking as my cardio. I figure this will be the best way to exercise and actually experience the places i'm in...... it will be a nice break from the gym too

hi kimberley I am an exercise fanatic as well and you will not have any trouble mantaining your fitness while in europe. Just carrying that backpack everywhere will do for UE strength training and all the walking and especially going up/down stairs will serve for LE strengthening and cardio. When I returned after my 2/12 month trip I had no problem getting back into my usual gym routine
