Hi Ok I know this is a long shot but this site has never disappointed before. I have got to teach a bunch of 5 and 6yr olds about Russia. I mean anything and everything about Russia. So I thought maybe among the worldly wise on this site someone may have some cool stories or ideas about Russia. Or if anyone has heard some nice nursery rhymes or traditional songs. I have got one nice nursery rhyme but I need a pheonetic translation so I can tell the children how to sing it. Truly grabbing at straws here any pointers or good web links would be very very very much apreciated.

Crystal, my knowledge of Russia is a bit limited, so not sure I'll be much help. Are you teaching just about present Russia, or also about the days of the USSR? Perhaps a brief history would be a good start, beginning with the overthrow of the Czars, into the Stalin and Lenin eras, and then the break up and current state of Russia.
As far as the nursery rhyme, could you provide an example of this? You might have some success by posting the nursery rhyme on the "Speaking in Tongues" branch of the Thorn Tree (Lonely Planet).
I imagine the attention span of five and six years olds is not that long, so just a brief overview should suffice?
Good luck!!!

If you're looking for an easy afternoon, The Corpse Bride is based on a 19th century Russian-Jewish folktale.

do you have to cover a bit of everything about russia? if not, maybe you can write about the russian space program, you should find a lot of information (in english) about this topic.

Thanks for the suggestions. we are doing a bit of everything - 2 days in now. Just did the whole space thing today made some cute if not entirely scientific looking rockets. Decided to do Peter and the Wolf story which we are gonna act out on Thurs. We also did a bit of stuff on Faberge and made some egg cards. We forgot about the nursery rhyme and just converted our own by substituting songs with english numbers in for russian numbers. Russian dancing tomorrow!!! Oh to be 6 again and tortured by over enthusiastic teachers

Guess I just get carried away!!! The russian dancing was cool enjoyed it more than the kids I think. This was just a one off week where the whole school from 5yr olds to 11yr olds do exactly the same topic right across all the subjects. So it was adding up and taking away Russian dolls, russian PE (dancing), russian baking, russian literacy, russian music get the idea yet? So I'm all Russian-ed out going for a sleep in a darkened room
