don't know. the cities i listed are pretty much on the rail lines between Freiburg & Köln.

but, if you want to go to a city in France, i can suggest Strasbourg. although, there's an Alsace/Elsaß influence ['Neither German neither French nor neutral.'] in Strasbourg/Straßburg. so, the French influence there is more recent, more superficial.

there a nice city on the Belgium/Netherlands border, Masstricht, which wouldn't be a detour on the way to Köln from Belgium. well, maybe it would be if you mean just the Ardennes area.
