nice to see another local team getting some success.
the Cowboys were a favorite, but now they're leaving Dallas.
the Stars had a nice run, getting the Stanley a while back.
now the Mavericks have just beat the Heat. so much for Shaq.

The Cowboys are leaving Dallas?! Do they have any idea who's going to replace them?
I guess that's the one thing about NFL that I completely disagree with - the almost franchised state of the teams. Correct me if I'm wrong, but doesn't it lead to a situation whereby people can just buy whole teams?
Also, what happens for the local fans in this situation? Would they continue to support the Cowboys (seeing them as 'their' team), or would they support the new local team, even though they don't really know them?

its the same with hockey. while i don't follow the nfl at all, the nhl teams usually only leave cities when the team is not making money for the owner. such as in the case of the nordiques... they are now the colorado avalanche i believe... a few ppl in quebec support them but most switched alegences for the montreal canadiens. a new team didn't replace in quebec. not a big enough market... most ppl follow the amateur league (where the nhl pulls players from).

I didn't know anyone here liked sports... all my sports posted seemed to go nowhere I could really care less about the NBA, I'm just glad Detroit lost. College Ball is more fun to watch. So who's watching the World cup? Any football fans here?

Patrick - I'll be watching it after my exams (Monday onwards ). There's certainly going to be some interesting games coming up. England definitely have good chances of winning too, not that I support them .

yeah, the Boys are moving across to the other side of the metroplex. Jerry Jones, Cowboys' ugly new owner, wanted the city to pay for a new stadium. [actually, that team moved to a suburb, Irving, in 1971, for that reason. but Texas Stadium, the Irving stadium, is still in Dallas county, just across the highway from city of Dallas. now, Jones has gotten a more distant suburb, Arlington, to levy taxes to build a new stadium by bankrolling over $5 million backing the ballot measure. Jones spent $5M on the campaign, so he wouldn't have to pay the $650M for a stadium with all the bells & whistles he wants. a pretty good deal! Arlington, which doesn't mind taxes to pay for pro sports - they're also home of Texas Rangers baseball team, has refused to join either regional mass transit system, or build their own, because "the taxes for that are too high." so, Arlington is the largest city in the United States that is not served by a public transportation system. (population about 360,000) oh, Arlington isn't in Dallas County. it's in Tarrant County. regarding your other questions: there was once an AFC (another football league, now merged with NFL) team called the Dallas Texans. when the Texans & Cowboys got started, 1960, Dallas wasn't really big enough for two teams in the same sport. so the Texans' owner moved the team to Kansas City and changed the name to the Chiefs, even though the Texans were here a little earlier. but, even now, 43 years later, there are people in Dallas who are fans of the Chiefs! so most people are too superficial to notice that the Cowboys aren't in Dallas anymore. The Cowboys are leaving Dallas?! Do they have any idea who's going to replace them? <snip> Also, what happens for the local fans in this situation? Would they continue to support the Cowboys (seeing them as 'their' team), or would they support the new local team, even though they don't really know them?

David - are they going to be the Arlington Cowboys then? Will Dallas get another pro football team? Jules - don't get one of those flags. I see them everywhere and they're really starting to annoy me . They're kind of associated with the 'Chav' (white trash would be the closest US approximation) element too - not a good thing to be linked with .

Arlington Cowboys, or Tarrant Cowboys, either one sounds good to me! it'd be nice to end the perception of association with Jones' team. but, that's not likely to happen. Dallas has a cachet that JJ (Jerry Jones) wants to exploit. he gets much more revenue from Dallas than Arlington. nor do i think there's much chance of Dallas' metro area <less than 5M> getting another NFL franchise. NYC's <18.5M> is the only metro area to have managed that for long. LA <metro population 17.5M> doesn't have an NFL team at all! [from 1982 - 1994 they had two! both teams left in 1994?] David - are they going to be the Arlington Cowboys then? Will Dallas get another pro football team?
