I didn't watch it, but my daughter was getting moment by moment updates from her friends on MSN Messenger. So I heard almost as soon as it happened.
If I had a little more energy, I'd head over to Commercial Drive and watch the celebrations. People must be going nuts!
And of course, if I had to choose a favorite between France and Italy, well, the choice is obvious. So Viva Italia!

YUp, i watched it, it was quite tight, well for all I know about soccer heheh I hate the 11 meter thing, its so easy to hit or miss, its almost impossible to be "great". xoxo Jen

I'm disappointed that it went to a penalty shoot out. That said, it's great that Italy won.
Also, did you guys see Zidane headbutting Materazzi in the chest? It'll be interesting to see what repercussions this has upon his career, especially seeing how France lost.

Yeah, i saw that, that was out of line. But it was also out of line how Materazzi held onto him for a couple seconds before that and then you saw them exchange some words. Who knows what goes on out there...

It doesn't matter either way because Zidane is done, he announced a while back that the World Cup would be his last days playing.
As for what was said, a lot of sources from the World Cup have been spreading that he called Zidane (born in Algeria) a 'dirty terrorist' or 'Arab terrorist'. If so, no wonder Zidane (often cool-headed) reacted like that and if anyone can confirm that, I wouldn't be surprised if Materazzi saw some problems - racist comments at the World Cup is pretty low.

Who knows what Materazzi said, but Zidane has had problems controlling his temper before. In a 1998 game, he stomped a Saudi player. So maybe that guy said something nasty too? ZZ has to take responsibility for his own violence.

Well obviously he does, but if Materazzi made racist remarks than both need to be punished.
ZZ does have a past though, pretty sure he was also red carded in the past few years for another headbutting incident.

Yeah, he definitely was red carded about 5 years back.
The issue with racist comments is proving it. Looking at Zidane's form then it could be very difficult to prove that it was an obviously provoked attack.

Well, no matter what was said or done. I mean, the guy held him back, said something to him and then got head butted. I am totally neutral with soccer cause i have interest in it only every 4 years. I think a headbutt deserves the red card, but what I mostly think is that if you punish one, punish both. The other had no right holding and saying something to tick him off, racist or not.

Well, if it was racist than something should be done but otherwise no. Insults and comments are made on the field every minute of play, it's part of competitive sports and players accept this and play through it (often returning the words). The fact that Zidane reacted like he did leads me to believe something out of the ordinary was said - if that's the case, punish both. If the comment was routine and Zidane was just frustrated, it's all on him.

Accroding to our press Materazzi made comments about ZZ mother and his Albanian roots. Something along the lines of that he was the son of a terrorist w***e and that he hoped ZZ family died a horrible death. I think this pushed a few buttons as his mother had just been taken to hospital that day to be treated for cancer. As far as I am concerned this seems to be more serious than normal football banter but ZZ should have tried to keep a lid on it. Materazzi got the result that he wanted - one of the world's greatest footballer sent off in a world cup final.

Yeh, who knows what was said though. I don't assume Zizou would lie but Materazzi has denied saying anything about his mother (didn't deny sister though). Zizou overreacted and never argued that he should have been ejected. The investigation is ongoing though and hopefully if Materazzi did cross the line, especially since he reportedly repeated his remarks over and over until ZZ finally snapped, he'll get punished as well.
