I was working on my European Studies essay when I got distracted by thoughts of being in Portugal (a love of mine). So, I started searching up hostels in Lisbon and somehow I came to this site. I've basically read everything on it and found the information incredibly useful, and when I thought it couldn't get any better... I found the message board! What a great idea. I love it already and I just found it. So, hello to you who have been on here for a while! I'm not good at introductions, so I'll save you the agony of having to read a horrible one. I'll say this much - I love everything Europe (I am even doing a degree on Europe!). I was born in Romania where I lived for half my life, then moved to Canada with my parents. Now I'm working on my University degree, trying to save up for the many different trips I plan on taking and yearning to be in Europe. Oh, and I have this obsession with Portugal... even though I've never been. My first trip that I am saving for is for Portugal, which I will take at latest February 07. ;D And yes, I'm already super excited for it... even though it's a while away. Anyone on here from Portugal? Been to Portugal? Has a shared obsession with Portugal? Would like to teach me Portuguese?

heh, welcome to the site! Portugal does seem amazing and I have planned to see it as well. Looks beautiful and their football (soccer) team is going to be a big contender at Euro 2008 and World Cup 2010 It's cool your studying Europe, I was actually considering doing that as well but opted for a History/Political Science degree - oh well right? Hope your plans go well!

Yeah, I've been to Portugal a couple of times and I'm back over there next week. A few days in Lisbon, followed by a couple of weeks down South - should be a good break from Uni work at least. It's an interesting country, especially the history behind the place. Also it's not that expensive (I guess it helps that I'm spending GBP though) compared to other European countries. The weather's pretty good too .

Spymoose - I'm so excited about the World Cup in South Africa (which I am planning to attend) and the Euros. I was very upset by Portugal's loss against France, but they did play well this year... and as you said, they'll be a pretty big contender in 2 and 4 years. MuuverRussia - do you speak Portuguese? Do you find it easy enough to get around without knowing the language? That's the one thing I'm always afraid of - getting lost and not having anyone there speak any English. I usually find my way around fine, but even so I'm always worried about it. Is there a way that I can reply directly to someones post?

MuvverRussia - do you speak Portuguese? Do you find it easy enough to get around without knowing the language? I speak enough Spanish to get by, but only very, very, very rudimentary Portuguese. Often I'll try, they'll realise that I speak English and will then use that. Failing that, the vast majority of younger people speak virtually fluent English, so you get by ok. You can get English language maps and stuff, especially if you buy them at home, so you shouldn't find yourself getting lost too badly.
