I was wandering if anyone has knowledge of internet availibility in europe. Most of the hostels we will be staying at say they have internet access, but i am not sure if they charge, or if there is a lot of competition from other travelers to use these computers...ect. I won't be typing up any depositions or anything like that, but basic internet access for e-mail and whatnot What about internet cafes? if someone could let me know what they experienced while in europe i would really appreciate it.

I've rarely encountered any problems overall in getting net acess....even in the smallest of towns. A few times the 'store' basically just had a family computer and the 'son' was kicked off when I inquired about using it. Fees vary, 1-5 euros per hour. Many places cut you a better price if you buy a drink or something. I always ask at the TI office in any town, they almost always know where you can get on. Not a hostel person so can't advise about that, although I know many do have it nowadays but not sure of how easy it is to gain access. Always check with the local library too...most do have machines and charge very little or nothing! Even if you are an out of towner. This is not a problem....you will find computers everywhere these days. But do check around...some are much less than others. ging

There are internet-cafés everywhere, sometimes you have to look for them a little harder, but if you ask the people in the hostel, they will give you directions.

yeah, don't worry about internet. they are everywhere, specially in big cities. sometimes hostels have their own internet cafes but i'd advise you going out since there are cheaper ones that those in the hostels. when i went to an internet cafe i was asked for some type of ID so they could keep a log on who uses them and stuff. after i was done i got my ID back.

Good call rchua! I had forgotten to mention that. The law in Italy has changed and you must have a 'legal' picture ID to gain net access. As in passport or drivers license. And it appeared to be very strictly enforced. I also had to show one of the above anywhere in Portugal but no 'law' was given as the reason. Not sure about other countries.....I seem to recall having to show something anywhere I was on this last trip, but only in Italy do I recall it being a huge deal.
