Depends on your travel style and where in the UK you are talking about. Personally, I'd not plan on less than 70-80 a day for london....I am NOT a hostel person so my lodging costs are a bit higher, but London is expensive no matter where you stay. Specifically where are you going to be/asking about??

London for a start, hostels work for me. I am pretty minimalistic so i don't need much, good food i will chase after though.

Yeah, those 3 were brutal as far as expense.
Take Interlaken for example. A bed in the Backpackers Villa in a 6-7 person dorm is $26 US a night.
Factor in your food, sightseeing, laundry etc. and you are at $50 in no time.
If you get a bed in a hostel for $20 US a night in London, you are doing alright.
Basically you want to research your accommodation. Then once you have that, look at adding at least $40 on to it for the UK, Scandinavia and Switzerland.

I have seen hostels in London for as cheap as 9 or 10 pounds per night, which is about $16 US. You can do things really cheaply, but keep in mind that you also want to experience the place and for that you need money for transport and money to see a few things. I would hate to go to London and not see concerts or plays, for example. London does have lots of free and by-donation museums and even concerts, so that helps. Also, in London at least, you often do not have a good kitchen in a really cheap hostel, which cuts down on your cooking opportunities. It's best to overestimate the amount you need, because it would be terrible to come to the end of your trip and have to live on bread and water (literally).
Post a few sample budgets and itineraries and we can maybe tell you if they are realistic, or what they would work out to in real terms. (E.g. $10 per day for food in London or Scandinavia will mean something very spartan!)

Restaurants and coffee bars are a luxury in Britain, avoid them totally if you are on a budget. HOWEVER: London does have some pretty cheap cafes, usually uninspiring places close to a tube station or market, and I have got better value in London than in smaller towns where there are ONLY expensive restaurants. But take-out fish & chips or kebabs are cheap and good value everywhere.

this thread is a little aged, but i would point out that it would be penny wise to stay at a "cheaper" hostel that's outside the city you want to visit.
transportation into the city can easily eat-up any savings from a cheaper - more distant - hostel.
