im an aussie, and in 11 days im flying to India for a month, then onto Europe for prob two years. im just wondering if, for the first part of the trip i should take travellers cheques or not. are they still widely used? ive heard credit cards are really the go now. any info would be great

TC's are not a very good way to go, if you have access to an account with an ATM. [two would be better, to have a backup]
ATM's gave good exchange rate, the bank rate, with a small fee for each withdrawal. <so larger withdrawals have a better effective rate> TC's often hit you both ways, bad rates for the exchange PLUS a fee! <the effective rate is really, really bad!>
as ATM's have become more dominant, fewer legit places even cash TC's. but, as i've never been to India, i know nothing about the situation there. it may well be that ATM's are virtually nonexistent there.
