Hi,some pressing questions. 1)The guidebooks lists price of DJH hostels in Kassel,Han-Munden,Goslar,Wurzgurg as Euro15,17,19 etc.l know this includes breakfast. But Does this price already include bedsheets/linen.If not ,l need to pay Euro 2-4 dollars and is this just once or for every nite stay? 2)The Die Bahn site lists 2 transport, one call AST and another S5.Are these buses or S-Bahn? Thanx!

The DJH site has this line: For reasons of hygiene, a pillowcase and sheets or a clean youth hostel sheet sleeping bag that can be washed very hot must be used on beds. If you do not bring your own bed linen/sheet sleeping bag with you, you can hire them for a small charge in the youth hostel. In some larger city hostels, the hire of sheets and pillowcases is included in the overnight price. If that is the case, bed linen will be provided for all visitors.
Bring your own sheet sleeping bag and you'll never need to hire sheets.
Where you find those transport terms? S is usually S-Bahn, but I have no idea what is AST.

Sheet sleeping bag is very light!!! It won't take much space or add weight to your backpack! My SSB folds into 1X8X10 inches size, really no trouble... and it's easier to use than sheets... just unfold and get into the sack! I bought it in London at the beginning of my trip (IIRC the price was 9 Pounds), and never had to rent sheets at hostels! If you'll have to rent sheets in all those 5-6 hostels on your list, you'll pay more than the cost of SSB for sure!

AST is accronym for Anruf-Sammel-Taxi. My knowledge of German is quite limited, so I don't know what that means... it should be some sort of public transportation, probably on road rather than rails... the AST travel from Alsfeld to Neustadt, where you meet the RE train from Frankfurt to Kassel... it has more than a dozen stops over this short journey... Whatever it is, this is the shortest connection you've got, and probably the cheapest... the connection via Fulda takes 2.36 hour unless you use ICE... ask for details when you get there...

Hi Nitsansh, thanx for your advice. l'm worried whether if all hostels will accept our own SSB,l understand some would require u to hire bedsheets/linen from them.BTW,what about blankets .Also, is there a travel gear website that shows a picture of this SSB thing, it sounds cool.l don't think my place sells this stuff, can l buy it when l arrive in Franfurt? l found another connection from Alsfeld to Kassel at 8.00am(if l can reach the station by then)using BUs and RE ,but they only list the DB price(l assume only the RB) fare as Euro 9,what's your best guess of the other bus fare part? Thanx!

I bought my SSB at the store of YHA in London. I assume SSB is available in travel equipment stores in Europe. I suggest that you contact DJH and ask where you can buy it in Frankfurt. Or contact the YHA in your country and ask if there is a shop that sells SSB near your home. The German YH are notorious for strict rules, and might not approve a home-made SSB. Note the warding of the above statement: "clean youth hostel sheet sleeping bag that can be washed very hot must be used on beds"... I don't recall that they actually checked my SSB, but you never know... The dialog was usually like this: Man/woman at reception: "Do you have sheets (or SSB)? Me: "Yes, I have it" Receptionist: "OK, the price is $$$"
In my recent trips to Czech Republic and Turkey, sheets were provided by the hostels, but I allways take my SSB just in case... it's a "must take" item for hostelling trips like towel and soap... and those SSB are lighter and smaller than standart towels...
As to your question about bus fare... if it's the short journey from Alsfeld to Neustadt I assume it should cost a few Euro... this is not something you should worry about...

Sheet sleeping bag has the same shape as sleeping bag but made of the same material as linen... The brand I have also has pillow case... Its size is about 200X80 cm, and if you can get a wider one it would be better... the bag is made of 2 pieces of linen sawn on one short side and both long sides for about 150cm, so you have a bag measured 80x150 which you sleep in. On the open side where your head is a piece of linen about 80x30 is sawn to one sheet as pillowcase. You can cover your head with the other sheet... Blankets are allways provided at hostels... usually 2 army-type blankets, if you know what that is... this is sufficient for most people, but if you are sensitive to cold wear a warm pijama or training or whatever clothes you wear in bed. Also, during the cold season the heating is on...
