My husband and I might take a quick trip in March. Looking for places to stay in Amsterdam, Bruges, and Paris. Don't need a private bath, but we want a double. Any suggestions?
Amsterdam seems to be expensive! Which part of town should we stay in? I can't tell from the maps where the 'central' area is. Near the museums? We're not looking for a party hostel.
Thinking about trying to get into Henri IV in Paris, which is super cheap. But there must be a drawback -- maybe it's dirty??
Any suggestions would be appreciated! I've been to Paris twice, but never to Amsterdam or Bruges, so any other tips would be appreciated!

I consider Dam Square as the center of Amsterdam, but this is a small and walkable city so you should not worry about distance. If you want to avoid the party style hostels, I would suggest the HI hostels, or if you don't want any sort of partying, The Shelter might be good for you. These Christian hostels allow no smoking and alcohol and have strict sex segregation.

Actually, in general Paris hotels are cheap. We were surprised at this, there are a ton of low budget hotels. Here are a couple ones I've heard are excellent for Paris, both in quality and price. Hotel Suez 31, boulevard Saint-Michel PHONE: 01 53 10 34 00 FAX: 01 40 51 79 44 www.hoteldesuez.fr/Hotel les Argonautes 12, rue de la Huchette PHONE: 01 43 54 09 82 FAX: 01 44 07 18 84 One to look at for Bruges (I love Bruges!): Bed and Breakfast: reservations.bookhostels.com/guideforeurope.com/hostel.php?HostelNumber=2187Kim

We stayed in Paris a couple of years ago, out in the 7th arrondissement (sp), which is blue collar, I understand. We stayed in a decent business-class chain-hotel (TINY rooms!) which was right next to the Metro stop, and cafes in that area were inexpensive and charming. My advice is to find a nice place that you can afford that's close to a Metro stop, then use the Metro to go anywhere you want.
