In Rome once I stayed at a place near the Vatican called Pensione Ottaviano, which is not a pension, but rather is a hostel and one toilet for the whole place (and it was broken). Anyway, this was a move up because we originally stayed in a dump near the train station because it was cheap. If the toilet is fixed, the place will be good. There is a 24-hour bakery nearby which is cheap and yummy.
The main reason that you should stay here is if some other places are full and if you want to be close to the Vatican (so you cen get in line early in the morning).

I stayed in the Ottiviano in october. Some slate it some find it great, the secret is to just be cool. Its run by three, very young girls and it feels kinda like your lodging with friends, and not staying in a hostel. They do have their work cut out, but they do work very hard. The toilet was fixed and theyve actually got 2. Location is great, 3 mins walk to the vatican, in a real nice area. I stayed for 4 nights. No problems.
