Hello:
I am planning on traveling to London this December. My head is dizzy from all the different hostels to choose from and I was hoping to get some suggestions from this board. Basically I am solo traveler who is looking for a cheap, clean, hostel to stay. I am 27 yro and not into the party scene. Would prefer to find a hostel that isn't a party place and is relatively quiet, but I would also like to meet other travelers. Also, I am unsure about which part of London I should be looking at. Since I am staying alone I do not want to end up in a shady area. Can anyone possibly provide some suggestions?
Thank you,
Danielle

It's not hostels, and I have no idea what sort of budget you are looking at....but I had a wonderful time in a B&B when I stayed in London last year....as a matter of fact am staying at the same place this year. If you can afford a bit more than a London hostel, I suggest looking at this site:
Londonhometohome.com
It's a group of folks who run B&B's, all parts of London, very agreeable to working with you and finding something in your budget and since it is 'private' homes they are in the suburbs as well as in town proper in all price ranges. And totally comfortable, so friendly, and surely NOT big party spots. Anita, who manages the site, is a joy to work with and most accomodating.

Definitely avoid giant hostels like the Generator. Look for the smaller hostels. Also avoid the HI hostels because they might have groups of school children. IIRC they are also the most expensive in London. When you consider which location is good for you, the 1st thing you should know is whether you would like to go out late at night. In that case, you should look for a central location so you don't need to spend lot of money on taxis. If you're not a "night owl", location near the center is not so important. London is a big city and you'll need transportation to get to sights anyway. You can even opt for a hostel in the suburbs and commute to the city center everyday - the difference in accomodation price between the center and suburbs could be bigger than what you would pay extra for transportation. When I visited London I stayed at a friend's house in a suburb called East Sheen (SW14). I used the weekly pass to travel to the city everyday in the morning and back in the evening. After the week was over I used daily off-peak tickets. These cost only a bit more than one-way single tickets, and are valid from 9.30AM (IIRC) till the end of service.

hi, i went to london earlier this year..........i stayed at the london house hotel in bayswater......it was nice, we had our own room, and for the most part it was quiet....not really a 'party' hostel/hotel, however there were several children staying on our floor, and kids tend to make noise. i would probaby stay here again just because it was inexpensive, it was in a great location(right near the tube) but it was also it on a quiet street, and the front desk staff was pretty helpful (when they spoke english) please feel free to email me if you have any questions...i don't have the price and contact info right on me at the moment.... iamthecoolestchica@yahoo.com

Ok, so I did some more research and I narrowed it down to the following:
Camden Inn Hostel Astor Hostel - Victoria St. Christopher - Greenwich 1st Contact (not kensington)
Even though I am only staying a week I was thinking about splitting up my time between these hostels especially if the first one I pick sucks. LOL! Does anyone have any experience with any of these hostels?
