Hello everyone,
I'll be arriving in Norway on July 27 planning to stay for about 10 days. Can anyone recommend any reliable and reasonably priced hostels for a person travelling alone? I will be staying in Oslo and Bergen and I also consider going to the Lofoten Islands. Any suggestions would be a great help.
Thanks,
Joanna

All of the Scandinavian capitals are expensive (Oslo being the smallest and most expensive). The city center has a cool castle and I also went to the Kon-Tiki Museum which displays the original Kon Tiki – that Thor Heyerdahl took across the Pacific and Ra II, that he sailed across the Atlantic. Also the Vikingskipsmuseet shows you 3 Viking burial ships. For lodging in Oslo, try the KFUM (YMCA) hostel - 5 minute walk from the station/Oslo Spektrum, and costs about 13 Euro ($12USD) in dorms. Two more options are Albertine hostel www.albertine.no (in walking distance from city center) and Haraldsheim www.vandrerhjem.no (easily reached with sub-way). One more option is Cochs pensjonat (located close to Karl Johans Gate and Slottet (royal residence)). It costs about 140 NOK ($16.50) (18.50 Euro) per day. www.virtualoslo.com/cochs_pensjonat/

The Y in Oslo was the cheapest hostel in town, but conditions are really poor. I slept on a matress in the basement. For that price, I wouldn't expect more than that. The HI hostels in Norway are good quality, but pricy. Expect to pay as much as 200 Krona (27$). There are 4 HI hostels in Oslo, 3 in Bergen. If you're going to explore the fjords, you'll find hostels conveniently located near most attractions. You'll need to get away from the train lines and use buses or boats to reach many places. Any mean of transportation is pricy, and you can easily spend 50-100$ in one day.
A "must see" site in Oslo is the sculpters park of Gustav Vigelland.
