The ratings are submitted by users then averaged out so I think it's pretty on the up and up. You can't buy the ratings.

In September 2002, I stayed at the Astor Victoria for 14 pounds per night (for 2 nights) and St. Christopher's-Shepherd's Bush for 80 pounds for 7 nights.
The Astor Victoria was at the beginning and end of my stay when I wanted to be close to Victoria Station (it's about 4 blocks). It was perfectly fine. The bathrooms are small, but work fine. The place was clean enough. They include a simple breakfast of cold cereal, milk, buns, butter, jam, and coffee every morning.
Even though St. Christopher's-Shepherd's Bush seems slightly remote, I actually really liked the location, because it's directly across the street from a tube stop. There's also a Safeway with a good deli two doors down. Since I was often coming back late at night by tube, I'd much prefer to spend 5-10 extra minutes on the tube and be directly across the street, rather than being in a more central location and having to walk several blocks from the tube.
