I stayed at the Hyde Park Inn for a week last June. I was alone, which was rare there- I didn't meet many people, i barely saw my (7!) roommates- it was a little dirty, the toilets were broken a lot, but it was cheap and in a safe and convienent place, sooo...depends on your priorities. Nobody bothered me, although the staff were a bit snooty...

What characteristics are you looking for?
Do you prefer a party or quiet place? Big or small? What services are essential to you? Kitchen, internet, loundry etc... Which location do you prefer? Is price a major factor?

I didn't start this thread, but if you're offering advice, I'm always looking for suggestions ;D Two of us will be in London for about 4 nights (june 1-5?) and would love some ideas. There are literally hundreds of choices I know, but we're looking for... A (relatively) quiet but sociable place that doesn't have to be in the heart of town but should be pretty close to a tube stop. Services aren't that important, definately not a kitchen or laundry (as it'll be our very first stop). internet is nice but certainly not necessary. Most important probably, is that it's CLEAN! It doesn't have to be sparkling, but I don't think I can handle bugs and creepy crawlies. And the bathrooms don't have to be in the rooms but the shared one hopefully won't be one dirty shower for the whole hostel Price is important, especially since I've heard London is one of the most expensive places to stay. We're willing to try a big or small hostel, but we're hoping to not have more than 6-8 people in the dorm room we're sharing. Maybe even four if it's not terribly expensive. Any suggestions? Appreciate any help you can give!

These ones have gotten good reviews on my site: Ashlee Housereservations.bookhostels.com/guideforeurope.com/hostel.php?HostelNumber=516Rated: 4/5I stayed for a week. Staff very friendly. Dorm rooms light and clean. I thought Kings Cross was great, hardly used public transport at all and we saw everything. Try the cool Thai BYO on Kings Cross Road..yuum. International Students House reservations.bookhostels.com/guideforeurope.com/hostel.php?HostelNumber=515Rated (2) 4/5:#1)I would recommend this hostel to others. It was clean, quiet and safe. I stayed in a private room which was a bit pricey but not bad for London. The location is very good. It's just across the street from the Great Portland Street underground station. The staff were not especially friendly, but then again, I didn't ask them for a lot of help. The hostel has a bar area that is great for meeting other people, and a quieter internet area with very affordable internet rates. The private room I stayed in was clean and quite large, with a sink and fridge. The bathrooms on the floor where I stayed were nice. One had a full bathtub with shower. The entire hostel was very clean. Also, the breakfast was good as well. All in all, a great experience! #2)The location is great-right across from the Great Portland Street Underground. I felt very safe walking back by myself after a night at the theater. The rooms are like uni dorm rooms- each with desks, closets and a sink. I thought it was clean and mostly quiet. My only complaint was the small shower area. There is hardly enough room to turn around in the stalls. There is a dining hall, internet cafe, luggage storage, tv room, bar, etc. St. Pancras YHA Hostel www.yha.org.uk/make_booking/process/hostel0173.htmlRated: 5/5 We stayed at this hostel for 5 days and thought that it was fantastic. The facility was extremely clean and the lockers in the room were very large. There was short term storage in the basement which was very helpful for us. The laundry was a little expensive but there was also a kitchen facility. The staff were very nice. The area is a little dodgy but we were just very careful and didn't have any problems. The hostel is close to lots of sites like the British museum and Leicester Square as well as the Kings Cross and Euston stations According to 4 users of my site, a definate no would be the Earls Court YHA. I've heard wonderful things about the Ashlee house as well, it's where I originally wanted to book us. Unfortunately the site says they're already booked for the first week in June so that's why I'm back to square one. Thanks for the tips on the other two though! They're $30 and $38 apiece per night respectively. Is that pretty typical for London? I know it's an expensive town, I just was wondering since I've heard the budget of $50/day before, was wondering how people manage this if they were spending over $30 just on a place to stay! As always, appreciate all the advice, especially since it's always so quick and helpful!

Accomodation in London is very expensive, perhaps the most expensive in Europe. Good hostels are around 20 pounds, which is ~32$. You should find slightly cheaper hostels in the 15-20 pounds range, and a few as low as 12-13 pounds, but I would be suspicious about them... Watch out if they have "English" breakfast, which is worth a few pounds extra.

i stayed in the hyde park inn for 3 nights, and the bathrooms were sick, the kitchen wasnt the cleanest, and most of the people there are other europeans living there while they look for work. wasnt the best place to meet people. i stayed at the hyde park hostel down the street for 2 nights a few weeks later and loved it. bathrooms were clean, bar and kitchen downstairs, internet, arcade, lounge, and actual travelers staying there. it was 11.50 ( pounds) a night for the dorm room i stayed in. safety was not a concern and they have a safe if you really want one. it was a great location, hyde park was out the front door, i jogged there every morning, and the bus and subway, grocery, bank, are all within 5 minute walk.

Thanks for all the great suggestions. I just saw a hostel for 13$ a night. I thought it sounded too good to be true, so I thought I'd ask my new buddies on this board Anyone stayed here, have any opinions? I'm not even sure exactly where it is, but have been told with the tube system in London, it doesn't matter that much. Any suggestions would be appreciated ;D Here's a direct link to the place I saw it listed (one of the sites you guys recommended, thanks so much ) reservations.bookhostels.com/guideforeurope.com/hostel.php?HostelNumber=596

is this "top ten" real? is this rating for sale? The Picadilly Hotel was voted one of the top ten hostels last month on Hostelworld, so that's a good sign!
