Hello All! I will be staying in London for about 6 months starting around November 15th and want to get a job hopefully as a bartender. I have bar tending and serving experience. Does anyone know how the hiring rate is for an American? I am a little nervous about finding a job in the travelers off season. Any information or tips would be greatly appreciated! Shannon

under the table jobs are risky. if you're caught, you might be told to leave the country. what are UK visa requirements for an American to stay there for 6 months? - d I will be staying in London for about 6 months starting around November 15th and want to get a job hopefully as a bartender. According to www.UKVisas.gov.uk"You asked if a national of United States needs a visa to come to the UK as a work permit holder for six months or less. No, you do not need a visa. On arrival in the UK you must satisfy an immigration officer that you qualify for entry to the United Kingdom as a work permit holder for six months or less under the Immigration Rules."

How would I get UK work permit? Also, when I do get a permit, how difficult would it be to get hired somewhere? I have bartending experience but am currently getting out of the Real Estate market where I did sales and banking... Basically I am pretty well rounded but I am unsure of the hiring rate during the winter season...

I'd put money on this being unsuccessful. There's a surplus of labour within those sectors due to the recent influx of Central and Eastern European (legal) EU workers. No company in their right mind would sponsor you for a work permit - why should they? It's a lot of money and hassle for no return when they can get a Polish person to do the job. To clarify, a work permit is separate from your visa. Check out www.workingintheuk.gov.uk/working_in_the_uk/en/homepage/schemes_and_programmes.html for more information, how to get a work permit etc. Getting a job is harder than you'd think, unless you want to work for virtually nothing on the black market (i.e. crop picking etc). The chance of you getting a skilled, or even semi skilled job are pretty low. Generally, I think you need to rethink. A condition of entry to the UK is being able to prove you have sufficient funds to support yourself for your stay without working (as you'll be without a work permit). For 6 months this is likely to be in the region of US$12-15k. Otherwise, you're running the risk of being bounced back.
