When travelling alone, I am a fan of hostels, because you can often meet people better there. B&Bs used to be friendly, with a communal lounge, but nowadays they are often very lonely places, with a TV in every room, so nobody makes contact, and you only meet other guests at breakfast time. Camping is cheaper than hostels, but in many ways very inconvenient.
Does anyone prefer a different sort of accommodation than hostels, and why?

I perfer hostels as well-but smaller, independent ones. I like the ones that have personality and the owners take real pride in them.
I have stayed in many HI hostels as well that were very nice, but a lot of time the school groups overtake the whole place.
I'm not THAT old, but I still like to get a good nights sleep!
I also perfer hostels with kitchens, as it saves alot of money when you can cook for yourself. That's one thing about staying in a hotel or pension, you get really sick of eating out all the time.
Not much of a camper, I like to shower too much!

although i've never done this, the thought has crossed my mind that, if one really wanted to, a camper could stroll into a hostel during the day and just take a shower there!
I mean, they check the beds to make sure no one is sleeping there w/o paying - but do they patrol the showers?
just a thought

In some hostels, you can't get to the rooms and showers without a key, which only paying guests should have... I've also seen small hostels that you get a key to the front door... Those are the places I like... it's much better with few people around and people from outside can't easily get in... It's good to stay in big party hostels, as long as the party doesn't continue in my bed room...
