are hostels the only option? Could I just rent a single room and cram my three friends in with me for the same price or does it not work that way. Privacy is not a huge concern but it wouldn't hurt. ANy advice for four first time travellers who wouldn't mind some privacy?

No, in Europe for the most part, prices are per person, not per room. For hostels, this is almost always the case. Some hostels have quad dorm rooms (sleeps 4 people), that would work out for you and your friends-you would all pay dorm prices but get a room for the 4 of you. Look around at the hostels you want to stay in and see what kind of dorms they offer. To be this specific though, you probably want to make reservations. My Hostel Booking section lists what kind of dorms each have etc. members.shaw.ca/guideforeurope/bookeurohostels.htmlKim

Don't know much about your proposed trip, but this is definitely a cheap alternative: www.wwoof.orgwww.wwoof.org/national.aspBasically, WWOOF stands for World Wide Opportunities on Organic Farms (or Willing Workers on Organic Farms, depending on where you come across the term) and is a great way to do some extended travelling on the cheap. The way it works is that you volunteer to work on an organic farm 4 hours a day, six days a week (usually), and in return you get free room and board. I don't know anyone that has done it in Europe, but the organization is extremely well-developed in New Zealand and some of the accommodation is luxurious and in great places. Many farms want people to stay for a certain amount of time, though, so it's not a two night type of thing. But you asked for alternatives, and this is a great way to live cheaply on the road. Ray

This may or may not work in your price range, but consider Priceline.com . If you are not in the US, you might find it easier to use Priceline Europe (http://www.priceline.co.uk) or one of the Priceline Asia sites: www.priceline.com.hk (if you want to bid in Hong Kong dollars) or www.priceline.com.sg (bid in Singapore dollars) The HK and SG sites work for any country anywhere. You just have to keep foreign currency rates in mind always. You can use Priceline.com even if you are not in the US, but you have to fiddle a bit with your address. If you want more info on cheap bidding, see these boards: www.biddingfortravel.comwww.betterbidding.comPriceline officially books a room for two adults. No guarantees on the type of beds (there may just be one). But usually you can phone ahead and get two beds if you prefer. Lots of people have gotten more than 2 people in their room without paying more. The only issue is whether they liked sleeping on the floor, I guess. Depending where you go, Priceline may or may not give you good deals. In London you can get deals that are about equivalent to the price for two people at a reasonable hostel in standard hostel beds. If you have a party of four, maybe just book two rooms and be done with it. If you like, email and I will give you exhaustive info on my bids for London.
