One of the most famous places to go for a smoke or a beer is called the Bulldog. Another very famous place is called the Grasshopper. There are several Bulldog and Grasshopper locations scattered around Amsterdam. These are nice places to hang out, but they are more expensive than other coffeshops in town. As for lodging at the Bulldog, it has a pretty good reputation and is centrally located near the RLD at Oudezijds Voorburgwal 220. Check them out on the web – www.bulldog.nl Expect to pay 20 € (Euro) for a dorm bed if it is available. This price includes breakfast.

What time of year is it?
26 EUR for a dorm is a pricy hostel... you can surely find other hostels for about 20E!

It's for the end of May 24,25
I also thought this was a bit pricy but after looking at availability at other locations for these dates I didn't really care for a few days. This was the rate on the internet........
I was just curious and was hoping not to expect such prices throughout the rest of my trip.

Accommodation in Amsterdam is brutal regardless, you may save a little but not much more. It's a major flight hub and is busy all year round, so don't worry too much about what you paid.
Amsterdam is on the high end of what you will pay for dorm rooms, it shouldn't be so bad in other places (with exception of most places in Switzerland and London)

Sorry... I didn't realize that hostels in Amsterdam are so pricy... The only cheaper place I could find on the IBN is Flying Pig Palace, with 10-bed dorms at 20.50E and 8-beds at 23.50... your 26E room at the Bulldog is also 8-beds... so you would save 10E for a couple of nights at the Palace, which is a bit far from the center (about half-hour walk)... You could also check the HI hostels... Stadstoelen is very close to RLD, but has only big dorms (but OTOH, doesn't accomodate school groups!) Read hostel reviews on these sites: www.bugeurope.com/www.amsterdamhotspots.nl/core.html

There is one SUPER cheap lodging place in Amsterdam. It's called The Last Waterhole and I believe it is run by Hell's Angels. It's on a small alley off of Warmoestraat pretty much in the middle of the Red Light District, pretty close to the train station.
The hostel has a bar and live music almost every night. It's easy to get from there to just about anywhere you want to go in Amsterdam. I don't know what the prices are, but I can almost guarantee they will be lower than anything else, and you can probably get a room without a reservation.
A note of warning: you get what you pay for. Be sure to bring clean sheets and anti-bacterial soap! ;D
Aside from being extremely grungy, it's relatively safe.
Cheers, Ray

I can't believe it, but the Last Waterhole actually has a website: www.lastwaterhole.nl/Prices range from 12 to 14 Euro for a dorm bed. It even looks like the place has cleaned up a bit... but I doubt it. Ray

Not quite among the "experienced" guard about 4 years to go .......... Although from the looks of that hostel I wouldn't be overly saddened by the age limit Amsterdam is my first stop - and I may be on a budget but cleanliness is godliness to this young lady and I'm very willing to spend a bit more money to stay somewhere clean! Not expecting 5 star hotels ya know but just clean....... can't be that hard to find can it? But I don't know s@!* - first time to Europe so I could be in for quite the adventure. Cheers! Wow - so much to look forward to right now.......... Europe, Canadian summer when I return, then FOOTBALL season! yeh!
