Hi! I like to know how I'm going to handle just about every situation so even though I'm not traveling for over a year, I can't get this out of my head! What do I do with the things I buy while I'm backpacking? Obviously, some things can fit in my backpack but what about the things that won't? Is it easy to just mail things home (eg. gifts, clothes that won't in my backpack, etc) or will I have to learn to control my shopping and only buy things that I can carry? I'll be traveling for about 3 months (if that makes any difference). Any suggestions will help A LOT!

Along your route, will you be staying with anyone you know, or just at hostels/hotels? If you'll be visiting someone you know in Europe, it might be smart to mail the things you buy to that person and then pick them up from them when you go to visit them (this would be ideal if they were the last or one of the last stops on your trip). Then you could get a cheap bag to carry on your plane ride home. Mailing things to other European countries is a lot cheaper than to the US or Canada. Just make sure the packages would arrive before you leave if you do this!
Even better, get the Eagle Creek Explorer LT backpack. It has a raincover that doubles as a duffel bag, which you could use as a rain cover all the way up until your departure from Europe, and then fill it with your purchases to take on the plane.
You can send packages home, but it will cost you more than carrying things home with you, if possible.
Or if you want to be really smart, pack very little and leave plenty of room in your backpack for purchases.

I think you'll find yourself surprised that you won't be doing much shopping... I never shopped. The only things I bought were at the end of my trip in Greece (jewelry) then in London (some clothes).
I would recommend you buy some pack-mates which are ziploc bags that when you roll them up, it sucks the air out and compresses the clothes. It saved a lot of space in my luggage for sure.

Hey! This helps a lot! I will be staying in hostels for the entire trip and unfortunately I don't know anyone living in Europe (if only I was that lucky). But this is some great advice! Thanks!
