I just requested a room at a hostel in Barcelona and they asked for a photo copy of my passport and credit card via fax or email. I haven't heard of this policy and just wanted to check other people's opinions before I did it.
Thanks so much lisa

This isn't unusual-although I usually try and get out of it as I don't like photocopies of my things floating around-especially when it comes to credit cards.
They usually use these methods instead of charging a deposit. This is what I usually do. I say I don't have a credit card/don't have a fax (whatever kind of excuse that will work) and that I could call to confirm my reservation two days before showing up. This worked a few times for us. And two days before showing up, I just gave them a quick call and everything was fine.
If that doesn't work, explain to them that you are uneasy with your personal information floating around and ask them for an alternative. I wouldn't be worried so much about a copy of your passport but the credit card.., I would just try to avoid that. Maybe say you don't have a credit card but you are willing to send a copy of your passport?
Let me know how it turns out!

Which hostel was it, out of curiousity?
