Yes, this is geared to the females out there. I was just wondering if it would be worth it to bring a nicer dress (you can find some that are made in that material that does not wrinkle) I would like to go to some nice clubs, restaurant and to the theatre.
My question.....has anyone out there taken a nicer dress and if yes, did you get much use out of it?
Thanks!

I am not a female, so hopefully someone of that gender will respond. Anyway, if you want to go to nice clubs, then you need to wear something fairly nice. If you will do a lot of dancing in such clubs, then go ahead and bring the nicer dress. Also, if the dress is something that can be worn at times other than clubs (so that it is not a waste of space) then why not bring it?
I am imagining maybe a black dress that goes somewhere around the knee? Obviously, the real problem comes with what will be needed because of the dress (different shoes, etc).

When I have traveled to various places I always bring a dress or something dressy.............. What if you find cheap tickets to the Opera (if you're like me) and you have nothing to wear!? Or one time in Quebec City we took a sunset dinner/dance cruise. Had I not brought something nice I would have been in trouble! This time when I go to Europe we're hoping to catch a concert maybe and we're definitely going to have a crazy big splurge meal in a restaurant somewhere. Since it will be the kind of restaurant where a jacket is required for men it would be inappopriate for me not to also dress-up! As for the fabric -- I own several black dresses in that ubiquitous non-wrinkle fabric. I think everything should be made with that!! Some people might disagree with me but I kind of like looking dressy sometimes! And I'm a BIG believer in dressing appropriately for every occassion!

Some of the best advice I was given from a friend was to bring some nice things to wear! I definitely got wonderful use out of several skirts / nice tank tops and I actually bought 2 dresses while I was travelling, they really don't take up too much space. I just got back from Europe and if that weather holds up you'll be seriously wanting the lightest and coolest clothing items you can get your hand on. A dress was a very welcome "airy" item to have ;D Trust me you never know when a local could ask you to some hosh posh dinner, or you might decide to go to the opera etc....... I did several times ;D Plus on days when you're not hiking around and being a tourist for 10 hours a day it's nice to dress well for dinner or in some cities to do a bit of shopping - some places you blend in much better if you're well dressed. But that's obviously just my opinion - because another friend of mine said not to bring nice outfits, I surely would have been underdressed at time had I not. Take it as you please

I second the "bring a dress" comment it definetly feels goos to be wearing something that doesn't autimatically scream tourist! Besides, I don't know why but it always feel clean when you put it on after a shower!
I had also brought one nice top to go out, and I can now see I am wearing the same thing very often in my pictures, but that's ok because most of time it was always in a differnt city!

While I've never backpacked before, I always make an effort to travel light. If you're afraid that you won't get enough use out of a dress, I suggest that you bring a nice tank top and a skirt that you can multi-task. I did that on a recent trip to NYC, and I got a lot of use out of them, both for the dressy occasions and the not so dressy. I wore the tank top (which had some sparkly stones on it to make it dressy) w/ a pair of shorts and sandles while doing some sightseeing and shopping, then paired it up later w/ the skirt and a nicer pair of shoes and was ready for a nice night out! I also made use of the skirt by "dressing it down" w/ some t-shirts and sandles. Also, don't worry about the extra weight of the nice shoes. Some things just can't be helped, and if you find light weight shoes it might not be a problem at all. Better yet, you could find multi-taskers again; there are some VERY nice thong sandles out there that could also be worn w/ casual outfits if you're out for some light sight-seeing or shopping and totally work dressed up too!
Anyway, HTH!

I think maybe I was referring to a different kind of dressy. My bad! 'Cause truth is boys and girls you should NEVER EVER wear thong sandals to the opera!!!!!! NEVER! However, if you just want to look less scruffy for a restaurant or stuff the dressy tanktop and skirt totally works!

That non-wrinkle fabric is fabulous! If it's a dress that has to be ironed, forget it.
I didn't bring a dressy dress but I did have a couple sundresses, which were awesome. Definately the coolest thing on hot days and you didn't have to match them up with anything else.
I just washed them in the sink and shook them out hard and let them dry and they were good to go.
I'm not into the bar scene so I didn't need anything to go with that but I always make sure my comfortable sandals are cute enough that they can go with both shorts and dresses as bringing more than 2 pairs of shoes is a definate no-no! ;D

lol, I think I was referring to a different type of thong sandle! ;D Not the beachy cheap kind, of course. There are lots of nice dressy "thong-type" sandles that are every bit as dressy as normal high heels (just watch Carrie on Sex & the City sometime and you'll see what I mean! ) Danielle
