If you are ever in Italy, there is a word that will strike fear in your heart, that word is sciopero. I was sleeping on the train when the conductor came back with the word that there was a train strike in Italy. This means that some 50% of the trains don't run. Where I was it was 100%. We were told the train was only going to Ljubljana, not Venice like I planned. Ok, no problem, just take a train to the border and catch a bus. Well...... it was more like catch a train to the border, let off at 5 am. There ARE NO BUSES. A group of us decided to cross the border on foot. We asked the Slovine conductor how far it was-2km. 4 km later we came to the border. They don't accept foot passengers, we would have to go back. They finally let us through, after the guard screamed at us in Italian. They detained everyone not from the European Union for about 20 minutes. Then, another small group (me, a guy from Malaysia, and 3 Italian guys started off to Trieste. Caught a tram to Trieste, there were no trains until 8 pm. Despite all the walking (how far is 8km anyways) the screaming guards, and the rain, stuck in Trieste when I wanted to be in Venice, I met some wonderful guys, one was from Trieste, so he gave me a guided tour. On to Venice, but more on that later.
Love Kathy
